Well...it could be that you're anxious (white coat hypertension will sometimes push the systolic up in the 180's for awhile), if you're older, it could be isolated systolic hypertension, etc. etc. The only real way to get a fix on bp is to buy a good home monitoring unit and take it yourself a couple times a day for weeks. Since you are posting on this board, I'm assuming there is a good chance that the high systolic is due to anxiety-and taking your own bp is the best way to figure that out...

That's not bad the bottom number is normal the top is a little high which as bassman said could be due to anxiety. And the home cuff is a good idea. Take it when you are fairly relaxed the top number will probably be lower. Love Phillipa

Also, do you have any other risk factors, like diabetes, smoking, heart problems? The reason to ask that is that you can have a bit higher than 140 systolic if you're without other factors...IOW, bp is just one risk factor for heart disease. But I still bet it's a little high due to anxiety. :>} Listen to Phillipa.
