Hi Ruth taken both. The real deal is supposed to be better. A lot of posters love the med. But me it tends to depress so I take valium instead. Love Phillipa

I've taken both for extended periods. It has been extremely effective for me for anxiety. Each time I take it it takes several weeks to build up a tolerance to whatever dose I'm going to be at. I've been on as much as 4 milligrams a day but that's when I wasn't able to work. Right now I'm on only half a milligram a day.
The biggest side effects for me are sleepiness - needing to sleep more hours in a day (how much more depends on how much of the drug I'm taking), and a loss of mental clarity. After a time I will acclimate and forget that its effecting my mental clarity until I stop taking it and then suddenly my intellectual world is a bit cripser.
When I went off 4 milligrams I did so 1/2 milligram a week, not because of a physical addiction but because I was going to have to deal with my underlying anxiety again. I've been on and off Klonopin numerous times and with appropriate tapering have never had a dependency problem.
It takes about an hour for a dose of Klonopin to really work for me, so its not a fast fix. For that I keep some Ativan in the house.
Good luck!
