I've read that in Borderline PD, patients sometimes take meds (trileptal, tegretol, neuroleptics) on an as-needed basis. Could other people (like..ME) do this as well?

I dont know..I read this one shrink's website, and he was giving BPD patients as-needed meds for their freak-outs. He was even using Haldol on an as-needed basis, apparently with good results. Since there's so much overlaps between BPD and Bipolar Disorders, I was thinking maybe once could do as-need mood stabilizers. Also, I read a shrink's blog (the last psychiatrist, I think) and he was saying that, given the nature of bipolar and similar disorders, it might be appropriate to use anti-manics only when there's some sort of manic activity. That makes sense to me, since I think long-term, constant medication has side effects and costs, so the risks:benefits ratio isn't always on the side of medication.

I have used depakote as needed as a sedative/grounding agent during stressfull times.
Also, I have used epival in the month or so around the start of school, and then slowly withdrew. It seemed to prevent the stress induced crazyness that can f*ck up the rest of the semester.
