5-Hydroxytryptophan with clomipramine (Anafranil)

Posted by lukeds on January 11, 2007, at 9:42:41

Hi. I will make 3 months taken Anafranil the next 19 of January, and two weeks taking 150mg, the same day. I take also 4mg of Xanax xr per day, and for insomnia 50mg of trazodone and 2 pills of
clometiazol.

I have GAD, OCD, social anxiety, depression and insomnia.

The treatment goes well for GAD, OCD, social anxiety and insomnia, but not the good enough for the depression, so I need advices of people that have had experiences with clomipramine (Anafranil)
in combiation with other drugs like 5-Hydroxytryptophan, lamictal or another one.

When is it better to take the 5-hydroxytryptophan with clomipramine? At night because it causes somnolence? In wich quantity?

The article was from 1974 I believe. Its not advised to take Anafranil with 5-HTP unless your doctor supervises this as this can cause Serotonin Syndrome. The same goes additionally for the combination with Trazodone.

Chlormethiazole is a drug no longer available in the US. Do be careful with it, it causes tolerance quickly and can be dangerous as well. It used to be used for alcohol detoxification here until severe issues were noticed.

And what about clomipramine with lamictal? » yxibow

Do anyone take clomipramine with lamictal?

Can lamictal improve the antidepressant effects of the clomipramine?

5htp added to an antidepressant is dangerous. Serotonin overload = serotonin syndrome = dangerous = feels aweful like you are dying = sometimes death results. It has been done however. But doses have to be small and monitored very closely. 5htp can build up and sneak up on you.

Lamictal can enhance any antidepressant. It can also do the opposite and make some people, like me, feel a lot more depressed than I was to start with.

Best bet, though it sucks, is to change only one thing at a time and give each change a few weeks to determine what is happening before making any other changes.
