Does trileptal help anxiety with benzos? And if it does at what dose? Thanks Phillipa

Trileptal helped my anxiety, but I wouldn't say it has any specific "anti-anxiety" action; its more like after a couple months at 900-1200mgs I started to feel calmer than if I had just been taking Klonopin (the combo was pretty good for me). It wasn't a strong enough effect to replace benzos for me, and I dont think its that great an idea if your big problem is anxiety, not mood swings (I had both), but...its an option.

Trileptal is not an anxiolytic drug. Any effect it has on anxiety would be secondary to stabilized mood or generalized blunting of consciousness due to membrane stabilization (Na+ channel blockade). If it had a real anxiolytic effect, people would be abusing it.

I don't know how it does it , but somehow directly
or indirectly I have experienced a fairly profound
anxiolytic effect from Trileptal. Unfortunately
it seems to poop out and I need to raise the Trileptal dose, and then it poops out again...blah.James

Hi, its me again. I had to create a new ID because
there was a problem with my "christmas" ID.Anyways, regarding Trileptal...
I take the following meds for Bipolar 1/Schizoaffective Disorders:
Zoloft 200mg
Geodon
Trileptal 350 mg BID
Campral
Clozapine 300 mgThe meds do an OK job treating the depressions
and mood swings.I just added Trileptal in place of Lamictal because I thought it would help more with anxiety.
Unfortunately the Zoloft isn't treating my anxiety
at all.The first time I took the intial Trileptal doses
(at 350 mgs), I felt a *very strong* anti-anxiety
effect. This strong effect lasted for a few hours
and then died down some. Since then I sometimes
get the same effect. How does the Trileptal work? Who knows, maybe
it works synergistically with the other meds like
the zoloft to get more bang from that med.To summarize, overall I feel less anxious. However, I wouldn't say its in the same league as
taking a strong benzo like Klonopin.Regards,
James

Hi Phillipa
There isn't really any evidence that Trileptal helps anxiety disorders. It wouldn't be a logical choice for you.

hello my fellow psycho-babblers,
Here's the thing. Finally, I've successfully detox from the effexor, after two long weeks of thinking I'd surely meet my maker.
Now the issue is, the Abilify and it's efficacy alone. I'm tired, hungry and never getting any sleep, if I do it's crazy wild dreams as well.
I currently take lamictal and Abilify alone because my pdoc is afraid of adding anything right now since most of the meds either make me eat like porky the pig or do nothing.
Personally, I think the lamictal has ran it's course and the Abilify is lying dormant. Does anyone have any suggestions?
This is the end of the thread.
