Do you wake up anxious/scared?

Posted by Johann on May 7, 2007, at 20:11:54

I do and have for years, although it is getting better. I am just wondering how common this is for the folks in this group.

In the middle of the night I do, especially if I had a nightmare. Sometimes in the first few minutes after I wake up, I have trouble figuring out whether my dream was real or not. I guess it's normal to feel weird when you're disoriented.
Do you feel anxiety in the mornings? How long does it last after you wake up?

Me too it stays until I get out of the house I hate staying in the house. Love Phillipa ps I also have panic attacks going to bed at night to read as I am now still and I can't stand being still even with the valium and small piece of xanax. Anyone else at night too? Love Phillipa

yes I often feel scared when I wake up. And things seem unreal and I don't have anywhere to call home. I often feel like my house is floating by itself and I can't remember what's outside the windows.

Sounds like Depersonalization Disorder! Be careful with the following. It's a bit frightening

Fred now I'm afraid to go to sleep. Will you come over literally and hold me safely as I sleep and be there in the morning to tell me what is going on? Love Phillipa

Sorry Phillipa the latest side effect from Nardil is insomnia. I wake at 2am and lie awake until 6. The fear subsides quite quickly after I've worked out where I am with a little abdominal breathing and perhaps some Xanax. Then I lie there peacefully thinking until it's time to get up. So it's not all bad. In the old days I'd have had a shot of scotch but I don't drink that stuff anymore

When I've had partners to do that it hasn't really helped I don't know why

Yes, I do. When I'm depressed I dream non stop, mostly anxious disturbed dreams, and then I wake up feeling incredibly anxious. It's hard because you feel there's no fixing the day anymore. When I'm going through a good patch I mostly wake up feeling refreshed- I think in my case it's got to do with disturbed vs non disturbed dreams

I use to all the time. I'd go to bed hoping I'd feel good in the morning but as soon as I woke up, before I even opened my eyes, the anxiety was there like a weight on my chest and my mind was spinning. I went like this for a few months until I had a mixed episode and was diagnosed bipolar. I hope it goes away for you. Klonopin often helps if you take it right before you go to bed.

Yes, it's the worst symptom for me. I wake up in the morning early with a feeling of doom/gloom and every problem seems magnified and so much worse. This has been since I reduced my xanax dose from 3mg. to 1.75mg and that was over a year ago!

Sometimes. When I've been on medications that were wrong or just not working, I've been woken up by panic attacks in my sleep. Lately, I sort of dread my job (I never wanted to teach HS), so I often start getting panicky as soon as I'm lucid. (At least it's triggered and not just random!) I'm sure that will pass after June 7th. :) I take some Xanax before I go to work. (Ativan is just too slow, I'd have to take it at 5 AM just to have it in full effect by 8:00.)
