Depakote

Posted by twinch42085 on October 3, 2007, at 21:58:03

I am currently taking 200mg of lamictal but am having to find a different mood stabilizer because my insurance will not pay for any more name brand drugs until the first of the year. So my pdoc wants to try me on depakote. I have tried tegretol in the past and it did nothing for me except make me depressed. The lamictal is working so well for me but I have to say goodbye. Is depakote a good choice? I will not try lithium. I am also on 25mg of Seroquel. Any advice?

thanks : )

What a bummer!! I take 200mg of Lamictal too. Great drug. Love it. Depakote seems to work very well for alot of people, however, it can be quite sedating compared to Lamictal. Try to take it in the evening if possible. What dose does he want you to start with?

I'm taking both Depakote and Lamictal. Started w/ Depakote. From experience and lots of different discussions about Depakote w/ my pdoc and in meetings Depakote is really more for the mania side of things. Sadly it doesn't help too much with the lower end (depression). Lamictal definintely helps in that area.

So I'd suggest if you do go only to Depakote and have depressive issues maybe add an AD?

Good Luck!

He is starting me on 250mg of Depakene the generic form of depakote. I am going to titrate 250mg every 5 days until I reach a 1000mg. When I reach a 1000mg I am suppose to have a blood check to see where my therapeutic range is.

thanks : )

Are you off of Lamictal? Keep in mind that Depakote _raises_ Lamictal levels (can actually double them). This effect starts occuring at 250mg of Depakote.

Just something to consider while making the switch.

I am titrating off the lamictal. Then I am to start at 250mg of depakote and increase by 250mg every 5 days.
