Hi
Today was my worst day since I started to take provigil couple of months back. I was a constant dose of 200mg daily or sometimes I would take an extra 100mg in the evening. Still I was sleeping better.
Now the story: Yesterday I took my morning dose 100mg as early as 6:AM and enjoyed the great benefits of this drug for quite a long time. I wasn't sure whether I need another 100 at noon, but not to disrupt the treatment, I took my noon dose also. Then as sun faded away, I felt like taking an extra 100mg in the evening to see how it goes. There weren't any noticeable effects and I could hardly say whether that evening dose had any positive effect on my mood contrary to my morning dose which is quite of use for me. Today, I woke up feeling a little bit jittery and a rapid beating heart. And when it was time to take Provigil, I took my morning dose as usual and Ahhh. I began to feel edgy, anxious shaking with a clouded sensorium. I thought this may pass and took my second dose at noon. It was a blunder. I began extremely excited, agitated to the point of mania and only after eating 4mg of Ativan, I got my life back. I was on the verge of suicide when these extreme agitation and anxiety began to torment me.
Now, my question to you informed guys is: Does provigil have a therapeutic range? that means more one takes there would NOT be any additional benefits other than adverse effects creeping on? It took 2 months for me to overcome many of the side effects of Provigil such as Crashing in the middle, extreme irritability and so. But the interesting thing is I still like Provigil, because it is the only medication which turned my biological clock at least 20 years back. When it works, I feel like a romantic teenager. I don't wannt this effect lost, so I won't be discontinuinng Provigil anywhere near. But now, I am under the impression, I have been taking a high dose (that is more than the therapeutic dose) all this time only to get provigil accummulated in my system to blow into a full blown hypomania.
From tomorrow onwards, I would try 50mg in the morning and another 50 at noon. Or I think, I will take the full dose 100 mg in the morning. I hope this may help and dissipate those unwanted affects.
Now, after reading my story, what do you think? Please comment, because I value your comments greatly. Were I popping Provigil awkwardly? My physician recommended dose was 200mg daily in the morning. I just spread this out to get the beneficial effects throughout the day without any come down. But today, I got it taking it at night right before bed was a blunder. I think when I dosed provigil in the morning, much of Provigil I took at night was still there in my system. So, I would probably would have been doubling the dose without worrying about the consequences.
Sorry for the long post. If any of you can shed any light on this subject, please! That would be very much infromative for me,

I have no answer to your questions, except to say that I'd talk to your doctor about possible bipolarity.
What I will tell you is that I found the best choice for me was 100mg in the morning, and an additional 50mg at noon. And not taking any in the evening...

According to this drug reference list, Provigil's half life is 15 hours, so once a day dosing is what is recommended.

I wouldn't think any drug to promote wakefulness should be taken in the evening. Now you know...

I have taken it for 4 yrs- off and on. It most DEFINITELY DOES cause agitation, irritibility- over sensitivity- crying; even irrational thinking. Be careful!
I started with 100 mgs in the am.
Always got a headache when it wore off AND my mood fell and I cried for no reason. SO I always had to take Xanax with it.The more I take at one time- the worse the "fall"
I have taken 100 mgs, 200mgs------now was up to 600 mgs! I am a 50 yr female who weighs 100 lbs!My only medical problem was a 20 yr UNdiagnosed Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroid Disease.
It is habit-forming- at higher doses it can induce/inhibit certain CYP3A4 substrates...
Every time I have stopped taking it for a month or more... then restarted, the first day or two was great...Then it lost any benefit.
"The effective elimination half-life of modafinal after multiple doses is about 15 hours. ....Steady states of total modafinal and the l-isomer (metabolite, I think) are reached after 2-4 days of dosing."
