Lithium Update + Questions

Posted by becksFLA on November 4, 2007, at 22:46:04

I've been on lithium for a while now, I was at 1200 for a while but came down because of brain fog. now I'm at 600. I would like to come off it completely if possible, not sure if it's doing anything maybe even harm. Can't tell if it's hurting or helping my anxiety....
Can I hear some talk about their experiences with lithium hopefully specific to anxiety? thanks a lot

My ex took it for a couple of weeks and he was very relaxed then went off it so it had to have helped his anxiety or he is bipolar and an angry one. Another friend thinks it does help with anxiety. Sorry not personal info took it once in a very low dose and it did make me tired. Phillipa ps this was for a pdoc worked with who thought it was good in low doses for PMS

I just started Lithium at 600mg 2 weeks ago. I think it is helping me with a lot of issues - racing thoughts, self-destructive behavior - but since being on it I have been having really bad panic attacks. I am not sure if it is from the Lithium or the Seroquel. I have an appt with my Pdoc next Monday and will post an update on what his thoughts are. I'll be interested to see other responses to your thread as well. I'm not convinced that the Lithium is causing the panic attacks.

When you were on 1200 mg did you notice your anxiety was better (even though you were in a fog)?

I was reading your post up a couple days ago about the panic attacks, which caused me to make this post. I'll be curious what your doc has to say. If you've been dealing with anxiety for more than a few years as I have, you'll know with all the different meds and ups and downs, it's really hard to tell what's causing what. At 1200 I thought it may have been helping the anxiety, but the brain fog was way too severe, I was so slow learning things on the job it was embarassing. What doesn't make any sense to me is that now at 600 the anxiety is worse than before I started Lithium in the first place. I have no idea........

It is really confusing and difficult to pinpoint what the exact cause of the panic attacks are - seems like a lot of posts indicate Lithium helps with anxiety, so I am hoping my dose just isn't high enough. But I'm with you on the brain fog- I get a couple hours of day of feeling really spaced out, can't imagine what a higher dose of the Lithium will do. But one thing I know for sure, I'd much rather deal with the foggy brain than these panic attacks. They are brutal!

I'm going to stick with it, and the Seroquel, and see what my PDOC says. I really feel that there is no perfect drug out there and thus far the Lithium and Seroquel are helping me, now if we can just kill the panic attacks, I might be good to go for a while.

I'll look forward to what med you decide to try next and how it works for the panic.

Take Care.
