Do you ever worry that your pdoc will get fed up

Posted by kezia on January 8, 2008, at 15:21:34

with you and ditch you?

I have had to take a significant amount of time off work in the past few years due to both physical and mental health issues (physical came first, followed by mental0. I seem to make a bit of progress only to get knocked down again. I have a very good pdoc, but I worry sometimes that he will get fed up with me and get really mad and ditch me. I am always med-compliant, so that is not an issue. I have refused one treatment - birth control pills to control irregular periods, which bring with them PMDD from hell, but only because I had a severe reaction to a progestin-only birth control which actually led me to see my pdoc.

Anyway, I get so scared sometimes about my pdoc abondoning me (yes, I have abandonment issues) and that I will make him mad or something.

I am rambling, but I just wanted to know if others have these fears as well.

No thankfully my pdoc has proven he will stick with me forever if necessary. He even said he will treat me if I was without insurance as it has come close to coming to this. The behavioral stuff is what they should be able to put up with since that is why we go to them, right?

Not taking one med is nothing either. I have refused a few and although he has disagreed with me, he hasn't ditched me since I was usually right and now I challenge him more than he challenges me. It is always better (I feel) to have a 2 way relationship with your doc than a 1 way one. This is helpful in that I don't always accept his advice, but I always appreciate it.

Stargazer wish I had a stronger one like you do as mine basically asks me what I want. Still looking but mine is getting very old as well is the drive. I'm thinking she's going to retire soon. Love Phillipa

I worry about my pdoc retiring too. He's not quite that old yet. Do wonder what will hapen then.

I worry that I have upset my pdoc as well. He no longer takes my insurance, but insists that I stay. Has me on a sliding scale, and can file out of network on my own.

I think I've had a couple pdocs who got fed up with me. They didn't seem to like the idea that the patient in front of them studied hundreds of pubmed clinical studies on meds and hundreds of research articles on the intricate mechanisms of drugs and hundreds of first hand reports of actual real world experiences of other people. I think they preferred patients to not know so much. I tended to debate and question and suggest. I don't think they liked that. Of course, I never would have had to debate, question, or suggest anything if they had been real good at what they did. So it didn't matter they were fed up with me. They were not worth paying in the first place.

I did have an awesome pdoc once. He was real old. I was afraid he wanted to give up on me because either I could not tolerate the meds he prescribed or I reacted negatively to them. It didn't phase him at all. He had seen it all for a lifetime. He knew his stuff. He got me on the right meds eventually, but then he retired!

There is a doctor involved with psychiatric problems of mercury toxic folks who knows that most of them will have intolerable or negative reactions to most meds. But he has the experience to know that if he tries 20 meds selected based on his career experience, 2 or 3 of them will end up being good. It's just a matter of not getting frustrated, knowing in advance there will be many failures before an eventual success. That kind of doctor is not likely to get fed up with you.

I think when a doc wants to give up on you there are obvious clues. They don't return your calls. They don't listen real close to what you say at appointments. They discard whatever suggestions you might have. They say there isn't much left. If that happens, it is an unintentional but glaring advertisement that they are in the lower quadrant of their profession's skill.

I understand the fear. I used to worry sometimes that my pdoc would get frustrated given the treatment resistant nature of my depression and my extreme sensitivity to side effects. (I think I worried more that she would *feel* frustrated, not that she'd ditch me.) But she never even blinked, she just kept working with me. A good doctor understands that it can just plain take time and patience. Keep plugging away.

Huge thanks to all of you

I just wanted to thank everyone who replied to my post. My pdoc is so patient and understanding, I just worry sometimes that he may think I am not trying hard enough or something. The only time I hear frustration is when I say you must be sick of me. He always reassures me that he is there to help me, etc. My previous pdoc was quite arrogant and nasty, not to mention that he would fall asleep during appointments (good for the self-esteem, eh?).

Anyway, I spoke to my pdoc by phone and felt much better after. I can be a bit neurotic at times when it comes to thinking people may be upset with me or will abandon me (childhood sh*t).

So, thanks again. It really meant a lot to hear others views and experiences and to receive some reassurance.

All the best to you all.

You're welcome and don't think I'd like a pdoc that fell asleep during sessions. Phillipa
