Hi everyone. I have been rx'd Depakote 500mg twice a day, 1 in morn and 1 at night. I have been diagnosed with mixed state bipolar and my PDOC says it will calm my racing thoughts and severe mood swings and also help with my sleep, which is terrible at present!. I keep suffering morbid and scarey nightmares, often featuring death, not pleasent. I wanted to know how long it will take before the Depakote will kick in?. The reason I ask this is because it' been about 7 hours since I took my first 500mg and all I can say is I feel so calm and relaxed, it's weird, but I like it!. At present my mind seems very clear with no racing thoughts or depression, does Depakote really work this quick or is this just a case of mind over matter?. Please can anyone give me some feedback on this and tell me of your experience on Dep for bipolar disorder. Thank you in advance.

I take 250mg of depakene. 2 in the morning and 2 at night. It works well. I was diagnosed with bipolar about 2 years ago. Normally it takes up to 8 weeks to start feeling the effects, but it can happen sooner. You will need lab work to show if you're in the therapuetic range.
If you see that things are doing worse after the first couple of weeks then talk with your pdoc about adding a neuroleptic.
GoodLuck : )
