Lamictal cognitive impairment

Posted by Quintal on July 9, 2008, at 14:57:54

This side effect is starting to bother me quite a lot. It seems to be getting worse the longer I take it, not bettter. I'm having that strange 'dyslexia' side effect where letters seem to rearrange themselves on the page, I say and think things back-to-front and inside-out, have word-finding difficulties and my spelling is atrocious. Yesterday I nearly had to stop the car and rest for a bit while I sorted my head out. I felt as though I couldn't concentrate properly on driving, couldn't tell where I was in space, like I was floating out of my body a little. It was very unnerving. My memory is also deteriorating.

I'm taking 100mg in the morning. I've tried splitting the dose 50mg on a morning and 50mg at night, but I find whenever I take Lamictal at night I don't sleep properly. I'm starting to want to be off this drug. Maybe I can lower the dose to 50mg? I think the side effects were better at that range. I can't think of any mood stabilizers that are likely to be much better, which is why I'm inclined to stick to it for the near future. Maybe I should try adding a smart-drug antidote?

Q didn't know that was a side effect of lamictal as I took 50mg at night and had no problems sleeping just the spitting. What other meds are you on and what does your team think? Did you do drug checker to see if all med compatiable. Sorry your're having this problem. Love Phillipa

I'm up to 125mg/day of Lamictal, and I don't see any cognitive or memory loss. I have a bit, especially recalling names, but I put that down to age rather than drugs. At any rate, I haven't noticed it getting worse on Lamictal.

I'll post if it gets worse, since I think I'm headed for 200mg/day.

I've read that this is a problem with some people, and with some people it fades with time. I just recently increased to 300, and it seems to affect me slightly. Such as trying to do math in my head. I also read a post once where it helped someone with their cognitive ability.

I've taken Lamictal on three seperate occasions. The longest I took Lamictal was for two years at 200mg, and could hardly read a book in the first few months. I think it lessened over time, but I was still impaired. I'm not sure why I put up with it. I mustn't have been bothered about it at that time. I don't think it's age related becuase I'm only 26. I'm not sure what smart drug I might add. It's probably better to just lower the dose or come off it.
