Poop-out: How do you know the warning signs?? :(

Posted by Molybdenum on July 11, 2008, at 19:55:56

Hi All,

I am on a hefty dose of California rocket fuel (venlafaxine & mirtazapine) which has been working pretty well as an AD for years.

The last 6 months I started having days when I felt pretty bad for no real reason. Lately I've started having a week or so feeling awful.

I'd just like to know if anyone has any thoughts on exactly how you know when the ADs have pooped-out on you?

I was on citalopram years ago. It worked well at 40mg, then I started increasing it up to 80mg but the last year I really think it wasn't working at all. I just thought that was my fate in life. I didn't know of the concept of pooping-out. I certainly had never had any other sort of med just "stop working". So I just put up with the depression until I finally heard about the phenomenon & changed to the new ADs.

I can't bear the thought of just waiting & waiting until I feel depressed "all the time". And unfortunately I can't possibly increase the dosage of the ADs. So how do you know if pooping-out is really happening to you?

Thanks ;)

Mr. M.

Mr M did something happen in your life that knocked you down? That could or might cause your symptoms but from reading this board seems it's quite common. I won't comment further as no experience with it. Love Phillipa

Hey Phillipa,

nothing special has happened. That's why I'm wondering of poop-out's the cause. Can't seem to find anything the least bit scientific on the net talking about "how to tell" or "warning signs". I did find a post at another forum where someone suggested that if you started getting withdrawal symptoms without changing your dose, THAT might indicate poop-out.

I just wish I could find some way to know before it becomes horribly obvious. And then I have to dig my wat OUT of the hole again....

Thanks

Mr. M.

That post on the other board reminds me of tolerance with benzos. I really wish someone would answer your thread that really knows. Love Phillipa

I've suffered from poop-out from all AD's. You're pretty much describing the signs...for me, I would just feel depression creeping back in, my motivation would start to decline and I would get weepy for no reason. Despite upping the dosages, they all have pooped out on me, usually within 6 months to a year and I've pretty much been on all the SSRI's, SNRI's and tried some TCA's. Right now we are trying MAOI's, hoping that I will get some longevity from them.

I don't know the scientific reason it happens, but it does. You should talk to your doctor and tell him how you are feeling and your concern that your med is pooping out. Going off and on meds is no fun...I hope you find one that lasts for you.

Thanks all for the bleak yet honest answers...

As a last chance, has anyone heard of pooping out on one drug, then changing for a few months, then having the original one start to work again, ie have you ever heard of "un-poop-out".....?

;)

I've had AD's work again after a period off them..however, my problem is they all poop out in the end. Hopefully, that won't be your problem. It's a frustrating situation to be sure. Best of luck to you..
