is anyone using nortriptyline as an augmentor?

Posted by g_g_g_unit on October 16, 2008, at 3:44:37

just wondering about people's experiences on nortriptyline as an augmentation agent. i began 10mg at night about a week ago - in anticipation of adding an ssri once i understand the effect nortrip has on its own - and it's hard to infer much at this stage. i definitely feel more motivated during the day. after i take it at night though i'm overcome by a weird feeling of tiredness/fuzziness + alertness. i realise sometimes when i expect something to make me sleep i can paradoxically get more anxious waiting for it to 'work'. but with something like remeron, in spite of my anticipation, i would pass out within 10/15 minutes. is 10mg simply too low a dose? does it get more obviously sedating the higher up you go?

As monotherapy for depression, the effective dose of nortriptyline is usually 50mg-150mg. You might respond well to a lower dose. In that case, there's no reason to increase. Good idea to see how nortriptyline affects you alone before adding an SSRI. Let us know how you do.

Since you've already started nortrip try increasing 10 mg at a time and see if it does the trick on it's own without adding in another drug. Sometimes it's effective at doses as low as 50 mg.

See my post further down the list. I have just started Nortriptyline and used as augmentor - sort of...

You have neurotic tendencies and react wierdly to meds. I took up to 120 mg of nortrip and slept well. 10 mg and plastered is very unusual reaction.

thanks for your responses. i am happy to continue a trial of nortrip. i guess my frustration is just that my reaction to it so far doesn't seem too clear-cut: after taking a dose i'll feel immediately tired and begin to yawn, but after that i feel slightly energized and find it more difficult to get to sleep; also i am no calmer during the day, which isn't too promising, given that the hope is it will cancel out the inevitable anxiety and insomnia i experience on SSRI's. i'll push the dose up to 20mg though, and see if it has a more obvious effect.

I used to take it at bedtime. That way was not sedated during the day.
