Hi all,
This is a really basic question but I was wondering if taking your meds with food can make them work more effectively?
Or does it depend on the med?
Or is this just advised for certain meds so your stomach doesn't get upset?
Thank you,
Roslynn

I'd say it depends on the person and the med. I have never had problems on empty stomach take my meds at bedtime. Phillipa

Some meds work better on an empty stomach, some work better if taken with food. Some I think it doesn't matter but if it upsets your stomach oviously you'd take it with food. If your PDoc precribed it he/she should know, or, alot of times I just call my pharmacist, she would have access to the original product pckt.

it really depends on the med, i think geodon absorbs about 2x as much if taken with full meal.

Usually it will be indicated on the bottle if you are to take it with a meal or an empty stomach. It all depends on the med.

Some medications are metabolized by the liver while others are metabolized in the intestinal system. That is how certain meds are determined to be better to take with or without food.

I'm not a medical person, but I'm guessing that eating foods helps with those meds that are metabolized in the intestinal system because eating activates digestive juices that might not be there to act on the med if you take it on an empty stomach; or it could prevent nausea for the same reason.
Anyway, I forgot to mention -- make sure you ask the pharmacist about each med. They would know more about the metabolism than physicians, generally.
