what to take...

Posted by canyon17 on March 20, 2009, at 0:35:07

well there is no doubt for me paxil works the best for someone like me who suffers from anxiety/depression.... maybe just a bit more anxiety than depression, but both.

problem is it makes me lethargic. I am about 15-20 lbs overweight, 34 year old male. not too overweight, but I have been jogging and it feels good and I think I am making progress. If I start up on paxil again, I get lazy and the weight is sure to come back.

any other suggestions for a anxiety/depression combo? I added Wellbutrin a couple years ago and I felt like I was coming out of my skin. Effexor was too stimulating too. Lexapro was okay, but was like a "diet paxil", not quite as effective, not quite as many side effects.... so I dont prefer it.

Have you ever taken Luvox ? It's also potentially a "sleepier" SSRI like Paxil but doesn't have the short half life withdrawal and weight liability. It can be dosed to about 450mg depending on your needs and metabolism.

Sounds like your reaction to Wellbutrin is sort of like mine, it revs up my OCD -- may help libido, but its not really fun in the end. Effexor was like 20 cups of coffee.

I know its not fun trying to find an agent that helps both anxiety and depression -- some people are lucky that way but it may take a long trial on an SSRI to get there.

You didn't say what dosages of Wellbutrin and Effexor you took. I wonder if a lower dose of one of them would allow you to get some benefit without jumping out of your skin. It might be worth some experimentation as some of us can make do with less than "therapeutic" doses.

First ad was l0mg of paxil had to take lopressor 25mg first as so anxious even with .5xanax three times a day and was drinking beer at same time at night. But after three months it worked. Went off cause felt fine and the pdoc at the time said fine. I'd taken it for two years. Then came the luvox. Stuck on that one. Same reactions to effexor, lexapro, wellbutrin more than 20 cups of coffee ended up in hospital as was getting manic. So low doses could be an option or return to paxil? Phillipa

Buspirone might be worth a try. It's not related to benzos or ADs/xxRIs; it's its own class. I have little to no side effects taking this, it works, and it definitely does not make you sleepy, destroy your sex drive, or cause weight gain like many of the SSRIs. Doctors have told me most patients experience little to no side effects from it.

I was prescribed SSRIs for anxiety/panic attacks for the last 3 years and they made me feel horrible. Now I take the Buspirone with Wellbutrin and am much better off.

Good luck!

Some recommendations: (not a professional, but i've studied alot on how med's work, 2004)

Never taken Paxil, but i've read old articles long ago "calm fog", feels really slowing. Paxil released in 1990. Prozac was before, it [1987] Eli Lilly. Wellbutrin was actually released, [don't know, but it was bupoprion] in 1974, removed in 1986, because the dose where being used too high 600mg. Then was put back on the market 1989, with the current doses it has....150mg & 300mg in diffrent release forms. [Did it take from 1974-1986 to realize bupropion cause(s) psedo-siezures over 450mg?] I had a sieuzre on Wellbutrin, got off it. Me it, felt as my head was a battery "feeling", "irrtiblity", but did cause "motivation" lift.

Effexor....never taken but, it's very powerful at high doses (FDA standard), but also has horrid withdrawl symptomes. I just read alot of posts, it's not pleasant.

Prozac is stimulating itself, yet it's a SSRI.

Have you considered anything besdies, SSRI's, Selegine?

take care..

well I cant recall the Effexor but Wellbutrin was the lowest possible for I believe Wellbutrin XR

thanks for all your comments... Luvox I hadnt thought of. Any bad remarks for it?
