Metformin for weight increase from AntiPsychotics?

Posted by jerrypharmstudent on July 19, 2009, at 22:40:12

I've read that docs use Metformin to combat the weight gain associated with anti=psychotics. However, I was put on it years ago to combat Seroquel's weight effects and had terrible, terrible abdominal cramps.

I plan on asking my doc about it because I'm on Zyprexa and I'm gaining weight even tho I am exercising and eating better.

I guess my questions are - has anyone been on this combo with success? Do the abdominal cramps/diarrhea go away eventually?

Thanks in advance.
Jerry

Hi Jerry: Just thought I'd let you know what a friends experience has been with Xyprexa and Metformin. She's been on tons of bipolar meds for 25 years. Finally, the last six years, she has stabilized and done really well, really happy, dating etc. She takes Xyprexa (which she ADORES),metformin, lamictal, lexapro, dextrostat 4xday, and restoril. When she first started Xyprexa she put on a lot of weight. Her pdoc started her on Metformin. She felt better and had No side effects. By really eating little tiny meals and exercising she has been able, since the metformin, to LOSE weight, 25 pounds and still going. For her the Xyprexa was a life saver. She says she would do ANYTHING necessary to stay on it the rest of her life. So that's one gal's opinion. I can vouch for the fact that she's never felt so well and never been stable for such a long period of time. She's out of town for a week but when she's back I'd be happy to ask her any other questions you might have.
Good luck!
Gayle

Gayle,

Can you find out what dosage she uses to counteract the Zyprexa? I would be interested in knowing this...

Thanks

Shasing, I'd be happy to find out for you. She's on vacation now but I'll get the info when she's back.
I'm glad you're doing so well! Gayle

I take metformin and zyprexa for 2 years now. My highest dose of metformin was 2000mg. I never had abdominal cramps from it. That could be a bad sign, lactic accidociss. Check with your doctor, soon. Lactic accidosis can be fatal. Did you drink alcohol with the metformin, that is a good way to increase the chances of it. I belive there is a test for it can't remember what it is though.

I kept the weight off a lot easyer with higher doses of metformin. But, my diabetes is going away and my doctor is taking me off metformin now. I've gained a few pounds since then.
