I have ADD hooray! i can even get Adderall

Posted by West on October 4, 2009, at 8:40:36

As amazing as it sounds I've had ADHD/ADD diagnosed the other day, in the UK.

Doctors here are much slower to catch on than in the states and many are sceptics so I went private. (£400 + £600 in follow up appointments)

So having spent years battling with difficulties doing anything, due to weakness in character (I thought), I feel like i'm being given the green light again - lives before were something other people had.

I need to start treatment right away and I'm guessing most people prefer adderall to ritalin, but I don't know if the jury's out on amph's deleterious effects on the brain. I already take Effexor and my sleep is pretty bad, just so you know. I hope this is my magic ticket.

Great news!

My NHS (junior) pdoc is so utterly useless I'm tempted to borrow some money and do the same myself. How many appointments did you have for that £1000? How did you go about finding a private pdoc?

What did the diagnosis involve, out of interest?

Awesome. Hope you get your life back.

Let us know which you get and how you get on!

Hey -

Well I'm told that the 600 quid covers the face to face follow ups (usually at 3,6,9 weeks) and at least one e-mail or telephone conversation a week. Apparently he prices himself at the lower end of the market and from some of the other's estimates, it sounds about right.

Thanks for your kind words. If you go onto the aadd.org website and get onto the resources page they have a list of adult add specialists by region. Most of the privates are in London. I had to make an appointment last year at the capio nightingale in in the pits of depression while stuck between a full to bursting local mental health service and an impossible GP (who refused to prescribe what the local psch had recommended in a letter until I'd actually seen him).

Honestly I would go for it, it's your future and that's all that matters.

I wish my doctor understood, stimulant's help. I mean ADHD and depression, the only person that dictates in my life is my mother.
