I have every one of the sypmtoms x's 10 when it comes to dopamine deficiency. That has been my life. So now what? I need help. I have my appt with the Dr. on thursday at which point I hope we come up with a plan to come off 40 mg of paxil, buspar and stopping the Ritalin 40 mg. What worries me is that I may need to be admitted while I go through a wash out. I'm slowly trying to taper now and I'm not feeling to great at all. This is going to be really hard. Has anyone heard of selegine? Do I have to go through a wash out if I tried that?
Thanks everyone....

Well, if it is a true dopamine deficiency, the supplement tyrosine will correct it.
Usually it is more complicated than that.
But for sure, if your symptoms look like dopamine deficiency, they probably are within the norepinephrine/dopamine circuitry somewhere, and a serotonin med is likely the wrong way to go.

Hi Monica:
I don't know about seligeline, but your doctor will and he'll help you with all those things. It does get complicated when you have many things to get out of your system, then 2 weeks washout, but boy was it worth it for me.
Some pdocs know which drugs to take to go from one AD directly to another. It's tricky stuff. I've heard Paxil can be a bear but with your pdoc's help it might be a breeze for you. One way or another, you'll be getting on to an AD that will really and truly help you feel good.
Lots of good luck to you on Thursday!!
I'm anxious to hear what your pdoc will suggest!!Hugs,
Gayle

selegiline is MAO-B selective up to about 10mg. so you could theoretically take it alongside an SSRI so long as there wasnt a conflict with the enzymes that metabolize those meds. Once you exceed 10mg you start inhibiting MAO-A and with it comes the boost in serotonin and the increased odds of serotonin toxicity.
all the literature just says 'NO', it doesnt say 'why' or list the special cases in which you can make exceptions.

OMG what am I going to do all day till my appt? It's not until 4 pm, I drop off my kids in the morning and then come home and lay on the couch!! I've been doing this all week since my husbands been in the field. I didn't used to be this way, I used to be motivated and liked doing things. I rely on my ritalin to keep me going, which is starting to lose it's effect. You should see me drink a red bull!!! I don't work, don't have to, I'm tired of wasting the days away and feeling so blah about everything. I guess I know why the ECT treatments didn't work, I'm not depressed, it's this dopamine issue, I think. We'll see, I hope the pdoc doesn't look at me like I'm crazy when I bring it up along with all the symptoms. Wish me luck!!
Goodnight!!

Monica,
When do you see your doc? I'm going to sell mine on Emsam, a transdermal form of segeline. Supposedly it's safer, by-passes the gut, so less food restrictions on the lower dose. I'm hoping (hoping!) I can convince him to prescribe a low dose stimulant with it--though they are contra-indicated, people (doctors) use them w/ success. (Some also use provigil, which is not contra-indicated I believe.)
Fatigue. I'm so sorry. I have a kid, too. I'm exhausted, depressed, anxious, and 10+ hours of sleep is never enough. I hear you.
Let us know how you do, and wishing you all the luck and fortune in the world,

My appt is tomorrow at 4, hopefully all goes well and we can plan the washout. You know I've never had any issues coming off any medications, and I've tried them all!! That's cause I just stopped them too, I never tappered off that I can think of. Maybe coming of the paxil won't be so bad. I'm going to mention going back on the provigil and asking about the MAOI.Monica

fb I feel EMSAM is an excellent choice. Sorry you're also so tired. Love Phillipa
