Adderall and constipation

Posted by gritslad on January 25, 2011, at 19:25:56

Adderall is like a miracle for me, but I fear it is causing constipation and bloating, to which I am prone. Is this a side effect that will subside? Is there any trick, besides the usual, to combat it? I only take Adderall as needed and am hoping not to have to take it much once I regulate my sleep and start to exercise.

I have experienced similar results - trouble going to bathroom, and even some bleeding from straining so hard. I am not sure why this happens, I have tried addicting extra fiber (there is one that you just add to water and it dissolves). I cannot imagine the impact of the stimulant (and others) if I ate no fruit at all (my main source of fiber).
Even with fruit rich diet, I would still need stool softener or extra fiber.. I decided to avoid that and cut down on the dose.

I should add this. With Cymbalta and if I am not mistaken, atomoxetine - all have similar side effects of rectal bleeding upon using the bathroom. I am not sure weather it is because of straining increase due to feeling of constipation, or more muscular contractions on digestive tract. I know stool softener helped somewhat.
Take care.
