After a year of the search for the perfect medication, I had an excellent initial response to Trileptal...But after about 1 week on it, I started to have this throat closing sensation and anxiety attacks that came with it.
I even rechallenged it again later, it worked, but of course the throat closing sensation returned after about 1 week. This is so frustrating and I am losing hope.
My doctor and I are exploring other sodium channel blockers, but I found depakote made me EXTREMELY depressed after 1 week on it.. so that's out. Anyone else have suggestions for an anti-manic anticonvulsant out there?
Thanks,
Rob

I've read that high dose lamictal has some anti-manic+anti-psychotic properties. I don't know if it'd be strong enough for you, but your doc would know more about that.

Yea, I've tried lamictal... even small doses (25 mg) worsen the manic symptoms. I need an antimanic probably... Thanks though!

Topamax (topiramate)
I have seen this drug work very well in someone who suffered from mixed-states bipolar illness. If you start Topamax at 25 mg and move up very slowly to 100-200 mg, you will very likely avoid the cognitive impairments that this drug can produce.

I'm taking 450 of lithium currently... Helps some with depression at low dose, but manic symptoms like crying easily and severe sleep problems don't seem to respond :(
