My disability application was rejected

Posted by Christ_empowered on October 13, 2011, at 11:58:38

I wonder why? Do you think its because I went to a mental hospital where they thought I was "making it up" and the SS people believed that? Or do you think its just common practice to deny the first time around? I mean, in regards to the mental hospital where they thought I was making it up...the rest of my records should have made it pretty clear that I do, in fact, have a psychotic mood disorder (or...something).

I just don't know what to make of this, or what to do next. At least my parents can help me, until I'm able to get employed somewhere, doing something. But I just don't get it. I was kind of hoping to get disability so then I could apply to jobs and check "Yes" for "Have you received any disability payments within the past 12 months?" and hopefully they would overlook my spotty job history b/c of the tax credits for hiring disabled people.

Oh well. Maybe its for the best? Like, maybe this is God's way of pushing me to go back to school sooner, rather than later?

I just don't know.

CE I'm surprised you got rejected for mental reasons. It seems not most get rejected first time around and need a lawyer to plead their case. The Government is making it harder and harder to get. I think the average is two years. It's not easy now like when I got it. School is a great option and so fortunate to have parents that can help. I'm so sorry. Phillipa

I hear it is tough to get disability, so I am sorry, but not surprised. Did you have any legal counsel? If you reapply, try that if you haven't.

When might you go back to school? I think (my opinion) it would be so good for you as long as you pace the schedule and workload to avoid the stress that can accompany school.

They're running out of money and denying anyone they can. Multiple appeals are par for the course. Expect to have to go to hearings. I'm on my second appeal. I don't actually _want_ it, though; I'm just doing it because I must do it to receive benefits from the state, who will take all of the retroactive money should I get approved. I hope to be in school or working before I ever get approved.

Its now just a question of what program, which is really a bigger question: what do I want to do with my life? What I was thinking was use my sociology credits--I have lots of 'em--to get a degree in psychology. It'd be through an online school, which would ordinarily be sketchy, but these people are non-profit (check), accredited (check) and Christian (double check), so thats cool. I figure I can be done in 1.5-2 years, but I'll have to have my transcripts evaluated to be sure.

After that, I don't know. I could try to use my degree to satisfy that gen ed requirements for an Associate's in Nursing, and maybe do the program faster. The same school that I want to go to for an undergrad in psychology offers a mostly online master's in counseling, so that could be cool, but the idea of grad school seems so intimidating. And do I really want to be a counselor? Then again--could I make a go of any other possible career? I have my doubts.

Thanks for all the support everyone.

CE don't think so far ahead other than what you now enjoy doing. As you progress further you will find an area that jumps out at you. And do look into Radiation tech or whatever they are called have a facebook friend finishing up this year. Also a neighbor's Daughter graduated a year ago from a nursing school in SC and boy it's rough. Go slow take your time or stress could upset the apple cart. Believe me I know from past experience. I'll offer my two thoughts.

1) I think you should check into your local office for assistance with disabilities. They have all kinds of services dedicated to helping people with disabilities get back to work, including training and school. The requirements for qualifying for services is usually not as complicated as qualifying for SSI.

2) My understanding is that it is very common for disability applications to be denied in the first go-around. There are attorneys who specializing in fighting through the red tape. If they take your case, it's because they know they have a very good chance of succeeding. If they succeed, you will get retroactive benefits going back to the date you first applied. You'll have to share some of that with the attorney. So if you give entering the job market a shot and your disability interferes, I think you should talk to an attorney who specializes in disability claims.
