Geodon Experience

Posted by fox87stars on October 27, 2012, at 14:11:38

I am on Geodon (amongst many other meds) as part of my Bipolar treatment plan. When I first went on it I lost some weight and had a big moodlift. That was at 40 mgs. We titrated up to 120 mgs and the paranoia that we are trying to treat in under control ....which is great because a whole host of antipsychotics weren't efficacious. I am allowed to take it however I want...as long as its 120 mg total. If I take it during the day I end up in bed...but if I take it first thing in the morning and / or before I go to bed I have lots of energy during the day. My question is..what have other peoples experience been with Geodon. Its effects are so different depending on time of day I take it and I am puzzled.

Also, I always take it with at least 500 calories, as recommended

Any input it good input. I would like to find a way of optimizing dose so I can maintain weight loss and mood, as well as best anti-psychotic effect.

I apologize for the numerous grammatical errors. I'll be more careful in the future. If you have any questions, feel free to ask,

>When I first went on it I lost some weight and had a big moodlift. That was at 40 mgs.

Geodon's antidepressant effects are very strong and really are apparent at lower doses, say 20-80 mg. Not only is Geodon a 5ht1a partial agonist, its also an SNRI (seratonin, norepenphrine reuptake inhibitor).

>We titrated up to 120 mgs and the paranoia that we are trying to treat in under control

120-160 mgs is really the dosage range where Geodon becomes an antipsychotic. Lower doses yield a stronger AD effect.

>If I take it during the day I end up in bed

Geodon is a little bit of an antihistamine as well. It antagonizes H1 receptors which makes people sleepy. I found it was better to take it at night.

>I always take it with at least 500 calories

This is so it can be metabolized. If you don't eat when you take it, it loses about 50% of its efficacy.

>I would like to find a way of optimizing dose so I can maintain weight loss and mood, as well as best anti-psychotic effect.

Stay in that 120-160 mg range and I think you'll be happy.

I took most of my dose at night because it made me very tired. It helped a "mixed" episode I was having at the time, but I didn't get any additional benefit from it. I wish it helped my depression. For me it had less side effects than most of the other atypicals. Good luck, herpills
