After yrs. of meds. and therapy/ Time to try MAOI

Posted by metamorphosis on November 17, 2012, at 11:14:08

So, I have had severe social and generalized anxiety through my adult life. It has now morphed into agoraphobia. I have used lexapro, wellbutrin xl, klonopin. Though the symptoms are sometimes kept at bay. They disorders are just getting worse. So he will let me flush out and have a go at either parnate or nardil. I am excited. I have done the research but now I need to decide. I am diagnosed with severe social and generalized anxiety disorder. But I have always had co-morbid depression also. So, I can see the benefit of Nardil with the GABA and anxiety but I can also see the stimulating properties of Parnate to help with depression. I know certain meds can be added on carefully to balance things out. My pdoc understands that to. So, I am hoping to get some advice on which way to go. I have two weeks until I start. Please any feedback is appreciated!!!

With agraphobia and anxiety as prominent features, I'd go nardil first - it is effective in depression as well as anxiety states.

Clomipramine in adequate doseage (150mg/day) would also be well worth exploring

I agree with Jono on this one. I'm a long term user of Nardil and it is the "bomb" for social anxiety and atypical depression. Parnate was way too speedy for my anxiety and I had a rare, spontaneous hypertensive event which stopped the trial. I have been on 35+ different med combos. Nardil with clonazepam is the only thing that has worked for my diagnosis.

Why does it seem the Maoi's don't seem to stop working as the other classifications of meds seem to? Phillipa

How hard are the first few months on nardil? Some people seem to have so much difficulty. Do some of the side effects (sexual, weight gain) subside?

For me, the carbohydrate cravings were pretty bad. I gained a lot of weight at first, then had to work to take it off. I'm a large male, any dosage above 60mg caused anorgasmia at first. Most of the side effects ease with time. You will probably always need some kind of a sleep aid.

Nardil is only for serious depression. If some of the side effects keep you from trying it, you are probably not sick enough to use it. Nardil is the "bomb" for atypical depression and social anxiety. Nothing else works for me. It has saved my life.
