Hey all, first time poster, long time lurker.
Looking to see if anyone has any experience with/dealing with ruminations? For me, the content is almost solely romantic rejections, where I'll replay the interactions between me and whoever my last love interest was, over and over, like little mental movies. It's been happening for years now, they never leave, only transferred. It's incredibly distressing and I've lost pretty much everything I had worked so hard to achieve as a result.
With regards to treatment, therapy of various forms has had little impact, as well as a long list of medications. To date, I've been on sertraline, citalopram, mirtazapine, duloxetine, venlafaxine, nardil, all of the ADD meds apart from Adderall which isn't available to me, and lamotrigine as a mood stabiliser. I've just began a trial of Abilify 5mg and Prozac 20mg basically by my own choice; any input on this combination for this specific problem? Or would something else perhaps be more suitable?
Many thanks
Hiver

Welcome to psychobabble, Hiver!
I have somatic ruminations and have had them for about 7 years daily.
It is very disabling and has ruined a big part of my life. For your information it is hypocondria for me. I think about a specific part of my body that for instance ache or are swollen, over and over and over again. Checking myself constantly in the mirror or taking of my socks 200-300 times a day if it is my foot that is the object for the day.
And i have the same thing as you to where i go over a conversation i have had with a specific person over and over again. I even change the topic or the things i have said to check if the outcome (in my head) would have been different if i said this or that, and so on.
So, i feel you buddy :-)
I think that memantine was very good for this sort of problems if you can't tolerate the metabolic disturbances with zyprexa, or else i think that zyprexa is the best :-)
But i am going to make a 1-10 grade with medications i think is good or bad for this thing!
Here it goes:
Olanzapine 9
Memantine 7.5
Amitriptyline 7
risperdal 7.5
Perphenazine 8
Clonazepam 10-6.5 due to the fading of effect with time (for me)
And there is more to but this is the medication i think is good, but i have tried over 40 psych-meds in my life time so you can ask if you want to know something more! :-)Kind regards / J

Hey J, thanks for a brilliant response. Its terrible isnt it? The fact that the thought itself is not out of the ordinary, but the sheer quantity of repetition makes it unbearable. As for changing things said to check for a different outcome, that is absolutely spot on. Ive only just realised how much I actually do that.
I think Ill discuss switching out the Abilify (which hasnt done much in over a month) for Olanzapine with my Pdoc next week. Are you still on it yourself if you dont mind me asking? Did you experience the weight gain? Memantine also seems like a good call, not sure whether my Pdoc would go for it though.
Thanks again, Hiver
