Some people handle them better than others.
Here's my experience with them:
Nortriptyline - greatest benefit was anti-headache, amazing, but not good for anything else. The main side effects for me were: 1.Bad sleep 2.Low appetite 3.Dry mouth.
Desipramine - no benefit, too strong, dry mouth, pounding heartbeat, nervousness.
Amitriptyline - too strong, maybe ok for a horse but not a human. Unbelievable this is actually supposed to improve mood? Wow. Ok.
Chlomiprimine - the strongest, way too strong, like trying to tranquilize and stimulate, at the same time, an elephant.
The medication Savella is a potentially better option if someone is looking for a mixed serotonin-norepinephrine thing, rather than TCAs, Effexor, or Cymbalta. In my opinion. I did remarkably well with it at sub-therapeutic doses - less than the smallest starting dose. Really worked well. Regular doses didn't.
Everyone responds differently so it's hard to say if TCA side effects are as bad as they say.
