PB Peace Keeper Concept/Ideas..Dr. Bob/ALL

Posted by jay on July 10, 2002, at 6:32:31

OK..I have a 'rough' idea, from many of the posts I have read, about how we could introduce the PB Peacekeeper concept. It is rough, far from 'perfect'..but a start.

Let's say we have a group of 'judges'..but on a rotating basis. Dr. Bob (or the 'judges') find a post that needs 'civil' or such, attention. For starters, either Dr. Bob or one of the other 'judges' could talk with the person about the problem. This would be like a 'warning'..a 'Type 1' penalty.

After a second time it happens, the person is politely asked to not post anything further on the thread, until their 'trial' is over. It may be best to have an odd number of judges..say 3, to break any 'tie's.

The only way a person can continue to post is if they go through this process. Otherwise, the only option would be an automatic temp. ban. Now, what I think would be good would be a way for all parties to communicate. I just don't know how. I don't think it is fair to have it on the PB boards, becaue there may be personal information someone doesn't want to reveal. We may have to open up, or access, say a *private* Yahoogroups, or ezboard, forum.

The three PB 'judges' will hear the persons case, arguments, and reasoning. This will all be kept *confidential*, of course. At the end, the three 'Judges' will discuss the issues, make reccomendations, and either give a warning; or anywhere from a one week to a four week ban. Dr. Bob will have the final say in the decision, but hopefully for the most part, will allow the 'judges' decision to take place.

Now (to make things even more complicated:-), there could also be the choice of bringing the two or more people into the same room, with the 'judges' acting as moderators, hearing out each persons story, and at the end, have a final say in what the outcome could be.

Anyhow..this is VERY rough..and I am sorry it is so complicated...but nothing good comes easy. We want to make this as fair as possible.

I believe 'judges' should be choosen on the skills and ability to be objective, creative, and a firm belief in fairness.

Maybe we can take these ideas and put them into a 'Charter', which is housed on a webpage all can read at anytime.

I personally would be happy to volunteer, under Dr. Bob's direction, the construction of this system. Dr. Bob, I will even email you privately if you wish, so you could ask me further questions. It would be nice to have a few others who are keen on the idea, to contribute, and may be a good idea to put their names forth. Of course, it will all be run under 'democratic' ideals.

Phew....
OK..I am off to bed....

Hope to hear *any* feedback.

Best,
Jay

Jay,
Your ideas are excepionally good. in the school that I taught at, they had "in-school-suspension". your ideas are better than that, for the school's attempt to modify behavior was sweet in theory but sour in practice.
But your ideas could work in this community. I see a great benifit from your concept being implimented here.
However, for this to be implimented here, there would have to be consistant people devoted to your ideas. I could only commit to , perhaps, one day per week, for two hours. Of course, Dr. Bob would have veto powers.
Lou

I am not comfortable with this idea. While I don't agree with everything he does, I prefer that Dr. Bob be the sole moderator. I don't think posters should be judging what other posters say (in an official capacity), for good or bad. I think it could end up interfering with the support function of the site.

I do think some of the rules could be modified. I also understand some of the concerns posters have expressed from time to time about particular decisions by the moderator (but that's a different discussion).

I am going to go with Mist on this one. I think it doesn't need to be something "offical" but as a concept, I think people should always try to keep the peace AND help others keep the peace. I think Lou brought up the complexities of maintaining such an idea, so for that reason as well I think it is better to keep things un official, but like I said, the spirit should remain!
