Dr. Bob please look at this

Re: Apostrophe Abuse - Please mind your manners?,

Did I do this right?
It seems I am so hopeless at this part.
It's Partlycoudy posting on social babble and she seems to be having a hardtime.
How can I do better?
Larry Hoover I need your assistance.

Okay, I can see the part of the thread you're concerned about, but I'm not clear about your specific concern.

Is it the mention about chiding, or that she asked to not be posted to, and then the other posted did so anyway, while making fun of her posting name?

To bring specific attention to bear, you need to scroll down to the very very bottom of the message that concerns you. Way down, below the google search box, below the hotlinks, way down at the bottom, in text, is a phrase that starts....URL http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/social/.....whatever the babble post id is. Copy that, by highlighting it, cut and paste into your new message here to admin. That way, that highlighted URL turns into a hotlink to that specific message.

For example, partlycloudy asking ron1953 not to post to her:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/social/20040830/msgs/384308.html
And ron1953's reply:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/social/20040830/msgs/384312.html

I am honoured by the thought, but I most certainly do not plan to become a deputy. I don't want the responsibility, and I'm still trying to figure out my real role in life. <grin>

Sorry I wasn't able to get to this sooner, but I've blocked ron1953 from posting now.

BTW, this was the kind of situation in which deputy administrators can really help a lot, and there are openings right now, please see:

But I see a hopefully brief upsurge in a certain sort of very direct posting activity in the immediate future. I'm only saying this because if we expect to see it happening, we might be better able to see it for what it is and respond accordingly. I know it's hard not to take posts like that personally. Especially with profanity directed precisely at you and all. But I think that there is a reasonable chance that it's not personal at all. I think that the lack of an active deputy at the moment makes it an ideal time to strike out at Dr. Bob or the board in general, and what better way to do it? I'm not talking about any poster, not the poster in question on this thread or any other poster in particular. I'm just alerting people to the possibility that it might happen, and suggesting that they take that possibility into account before responding. In fact, that's going to be my default assumption when (not) responding to posts.

My own response to threads where there is no mistaking the application of civility rules will be to email Dr. Bob privately and wait for him to take care of it. In part because that's generally a wise response to things like profanity and very direct negative statements, but also because I think that is the least desired effect of posts containing very direct negative statements and profanity directed at another poster.

Dr. Bob is right. This is the sort of thing that I originally volunteered to be deputy to try to prevent. The more subtle stuff is a lot harder and more stressful, but this is the sort of area where a deputy can head things off early and keep a lot of people from getting administrative actions for responding to posts.

To clarify

Since I suppose my above post could be misconstrued.

I am in no way suggesting that the author of these posts had this motivation.

I am in no way suggesting that a person who dislikes Dr. Bob and or Babble is likely to be prone to be disruptive to the board by posting things that are in violation of the civility guidelines to other posters.

I am merely saying that among the legions (smile) of those who are angry with Dr. Bob and/or Babble, it is not inconceivable that there be posters who would consider this tactic. And that if we are the recipient of seemingly inexplicable posts, we might consider this possibility before responding or not responding.

I must have been nuts, but I had been thinking of volunteering. Two things were stopping me:

1) My relative newness here, coupled with a shaky start of sorts.

2) Limited time available on the boards.

But where to draw the line is a huge issue with me. This particular case is a no-brainer and wouldn't have caused any upset to take care of. But, my ideas don't always agree with the management. For example - the chemist thing below. It seems obvious by my reaction that I wouldn't have blocked chemist. But would that have upset others?

I can be a thick-skinned nice guy, but I can be a pretty thin-skinned enforcer.

What has happened to the one remaining deputy? Dinah has finally taken a much needed rest from the responsibilities of the job............what became of Medlib? I hope he/she is okay.

I think we had better know what has become of Medlib before recruiting new deputies. What if medlib is stuck in a cellar looking up references for you? ; ) Would people still want to be deputies then?

With seriousness........please do put more information in your deputy for hire thread. I mean deputy for volunteer. The pay stinks I've heard...... lol

Deputies aren't required to do anything at all, and I always chose not to make the close calls, because I might think something was uncivil that Dr. Bob didn't (which was frequently the case) and vice versa (less often the case). And there are specific guidelines for when deputies can act, so there were times I'd be really tense because there was a clearly uncivil post but no uncivil replies and I'd be afraid that everything would blow up while I was away from the computer. And also, I hated having to give a PBC to someone for replying to the uncivil post, but the rules for deputies seemed pretty clear to me, unless I misunderstood them all that time. I was to do nothing until there was an uncivil reply as well as an uncivil post, and I was left with the unfortunate necessity of having to give out PBC's to both.

That being said, while most people appreciate the difficult situation a deputy is in and were quite kind and forgiving, a reasonably thick skin is necessary at times. There really is no way to please all the people all the time, and there was the occasional negativity along with a lot of positive feedback directed towards me as deputy. I don't have a thick skin by nature, and it did require a certain amount of energy to keep a false one in place as much as possible. :) And very occasionally, posters who got PBC's or blocks got pretty angry and lashed out.

So is it odd to say I highly recommend the experience? I probably put more stress on myself than I needed to, but that's true of everything for me. And overall, I really do appreciate Dr. Bob giving me the opportunity to discover new abilities and strengths within myself.

If you'd like to do it, don't let disagreeing with Dr. Bob over some things deter you. I disagreed with him all the time. :)

Having figured out one's real role in life isn't a prerequisite. :-) And hopefully the responsibility would be shared, at least. Let me know if you have any other concerns...
