Hello, was just wondering if there is a secret group of people here who know much more than the rest of us.
Does this group of people actually get to converse with Dr. Bob? How, for example does one became a "Deputy"? Does one need to be a PBC "virgin" to be one? Also, is this group of people going on a trip to meet each other? Are you guys involved in the maintanence of this site? How did this site start out anyways? How did people find this place way back in 1998? I understand there was some research involved? How did it go? I think I read the paper a while back. How long will Dr. Bob keep this place running? It seems like an awful lot of work and the number of registered handles has grown quite a bit. I don't think this can be maintained for too long. What do others think? I'm just curious about the history of this place, sorry if I seem intrusive.
I wish I knew people well here, but unfortunately, I've only been here a few weeks. I'm a real person...I swear I'm a real person. I tell the truth too, please believe that I'm a real person. Also, I'm really not that "crazy" in real life...being online really disinhibits me. I swear that all the facts of my life are true and I truly write what I feel. :o)
Peace

All the answers...
Everything you would want to know
(In truth, more than anyone could possibly want to know...)
Can be found in the archives. It can be fun to have a dig around there.
But...
IMO one should be a bit careful about opening up old wounds, if you get what I mean.

> Hello, was just wondering if there is a secret group of people here who know much more than the rest of us.
I don't think it is a 'secret' group. Some people do know much more about the site etc than others. But that is because they have been here for a looong time. But all they know is recorded for posterity in the archives.
> Does this group of people actually get to converse with Dr. Bob?
Hmm. Define 'converse'.
Thats pretty much there in the archives too...>How, for example does one became a "Deputy"?
I think Dr Bob was trying to collate all the past threads (from the archives) on that. Its in there somewhere...
>Does one need to be a PBC "virgin" to be one?
Not to the best of my knowledge.
>Also, is this group of people going on a trip to meet each other?
Some people are going to Chicago to meet each other. Anyone is welcome to go.
>Are you guys involved in the maintanence of this site?
The ones going to Chicago?? The meet is open to anyone who wants to go. They aren't a 'private' group or anything like that.
>How did this site start out anyways?
Its in the archives...
(In fact that ones not too hard to find. The meds board was the first board that started so check out the oldest archive date).>How did people find this place way back in 1998?
I'm not sure... Google???
> I understand there was some research involved? How did it go?
I think there have been different bits at different times.
>How long will Dr. Bob keep this place running? It seems like an awful lot of work and the number of registered handles has grown quite a bit. I don't think this can be maintained for too long. What do others think?
Its been here for quite a while...
It has been maintained for quite a while...
Things have changed as the boards have grown...
Things will continue to change...
I like to think it will be here forever.> I wish I knew people well here, but unfortunately, I've only been here a few weeks.
And you will get to know people better over time
And they will get to know you better over time.

Shy Girl, A way I've found to get to know people better is to Babblemail them. Then you get to talk in private without everyone else reading what you write. I Babble with a lot of people. We've even exchanged pictures so you know what the person looks like you're talking with. Just be careful who you give personal information to. Get to know them for awhile. Fondly, Phillipa

*** i think alexandra_k and phillipa have it spot-on...there are very diverse folks who tend to, in my opionion from just over a year of participation, stick to a few areas that they are best suited, if the ``know more'' correlates to specialization (i am too grumpy to be of any use on social, and better with chemicals, for instance)...*****> Does this group of people actually get to converse with Dr. Bob?
*** if you define ``converse'' as one PBer sending apologetic emails to dr. bob after numerous infractions - and replies are always received - then sure, i certainly have had plenty of conversations :) *****
How, for example does one became a "Deputy"? Does one need to be a PBC "virgin" to be one? Also, is this group of people going on a trip to meet each other? Are you guys involved in the maintanence of this site?
**** other than deputies, noting the occasional web page outage, or redirecting, i opine ``nope.'' i see no evidence that root privileges are granted to anybody who posts here, although that is just a guess...****
How did this site start out anyways? How did people find this place way back in 1998? I understand there was some research involved? How did it go? I think I read the paper a while back. How long will Dr. Bob keep this place running?
*** ask dr. bob, if the appropriate answers are not in the archives, my suggestion...****
It seems like an awful lot of work and the number of registered handles has grown quite a bit. I don't think this can be maintained for too long. What do others think?
**** i think that a server or two properly maintained and backed-up, with a part-time sys admin on board can more than handle the technical aspects, as many are automated. dr. bob does comb through the posts, that is evident. the handling of registrations, password changes, archiving, and so forth is almost assuredly handled by crontabs, shell scripts, and fancier infrastructure on the software front...again, a guess, but the means are in place and have been for a long time (dec. 31, 1969, at least :))..****
I'm just curious about the history of this place, sorry if I seem intrusive.

Hi Shygirl,
I'm a PBC virgin (and intend to stay that way...)I'm not a deputy, from what I understand they are people who are able to monitor the site frequently enough to fill in for Dr. Bob.
We are trying to get together June 3-5 in Chicago. There is a thread at the beginning of this admin site.
I don't know all that much about the history of babble, I've only been here for 1 1/2 years.
I'm far less inhibited here, too. You guys know things my T doesn't.
