could we have bios?

Posted by tarabara on December 18, 2005, at 15:56:24

i was wondering if there was any chance that each poster could set up some sort of bio that could be accessed by other posters. i think this would be beneficial in order to find other like-minded posters w/ similar issues, careers, meds, interests, etc. the reason i'm interested in this is that i'm a grad student who teaches. i'm struggling with the titration on topamax and teaching b/c of the problem w/ word substitution and just being at a loss for words and just being out of it. it's also interesting how i've realized how a life of academia is perfect for someone suffering from a mood disorder. deadlines are always flexible. you can do your work at any hour, you only have to come to campus and teach and then you can leave. grad school gives you an excuse to be anti social because you can always be at home "working." i find this amusing. i have stumbled upon a few people who are in similar positions as me in academia and we have shared so many similarities in our life as well as similar diagnoses, meds, coping mechanisms, working styles, substance abuse, etc. it's fascinating and very helpful and supportive. if we could make this connection easier, i think it would be helpful.

i think issues that people struggle with are school, what kind of work they do, what their family's opinion of their illness is, their faith, their age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, how long they've been struggling with depression/mental illness, their diagnoses (or for fun, how many different diagnoses they have received which seems to be a HUGE frustration of some, including me,) and the list goes on. we could write a paragraph or two about our histories.

of course this would be optional for everyone, but i think that it would enforce a sense of community and understanding, which might improve some of the interactions and communications on the board. the more you know about someone, the harder it is to disregard, insult, and dismiss their opinion and the more likely you are to want to help and look out for their best interest. i just think that it would help foster a more caring community and i know it would help me connect with people who seem to be feeling and experiencing similar life courses.

just a thought...

I would want to read bios.

There are so many posters that I sometimes lose track of who is who.

i was reading some stuff that dr. bob wrote and it reminded me of something. something that he brought up was how powerful it is to connect with someone that you feel understands you and whom you can talk about things that you don't feel you can talk to anybody else in your life about, besides maybe your T or your pdoc. however, i should point out that a lot of discussion here is how to talk to your T and your pdoc about issues, symptoms and feelings.

ok, i know, long winded. i'll try to get to a point.

i know i would benefit a ton from group counseling and have thought about it and have even talked to my therapist about it. one big road block is that my mental health services come from the university where i am a grad student and i've been teaching a very popular 100 level course to undergrads for 3 years now and have had close to 600 students so far. i've already run into students while waiting for my appointments w/ my therapist which already makes me feel a little uncomfortable. do i really want to go to a sexual abuse meeting, or a substance abuse meeting, or an eating disorder meeting, or a "let's talk about my mental illness" meeting? i'm sure others have their reasons too.

every few weeks i get reports from students about where i have been sighted, such as a reggae concert (gasp) and bars, etc. i live in a small college town and my students lurk around every corner and deliver my pizza.

i have diverse and intelligent friends but i can honestly say that i have never been able to talk and/or ask questions like i do on this website. whatever can foster a closeness and make this easier for people would be great. i think the idea of bios is a great way to get to know each other and a great way to express one's self creatively or maybe just to vent about what a long, strange trip it's been!!

Thanks for thinking of improvements! Bios have come up before, for example:

and are on my to-do list.

Blogging here is something I've wondered about, too:

I would object to blogging here due to the restrictive rules of civility and having to give unrestricted use of the content to Dr. Bob. The whole point of blogging is freedom of self expression. Not that I have a problem with the civility rules here but that they are counter to the concept of blogging, where you get to say anything.

Don't sites that host blogs for people have guidelines that they're supposed to follow?

Based on the amount on nudity and sex stories I would say no. People can state their very specific opinions on religion and politics;
things your rules don't allow for here.
