Hello
does anyone have the faintest idea how I can go about getting
Java Virtual Machine version 1.4.0 (or later)
on my mac?
I've tried to find it on the java.com website, but there is nothing around for macs. I'm rather confused.
I got prompted to downloading an Java update on the apple/download pages, but it a) isn't working properly and b) I don't think its the java virtual machine thing.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi there, well I don't have a mac; this doesn't fit everything you said (no virtual machine); or maybe your equipment is too old for any of this to apply at all! (i.e., one of my PCs is an ancient one that occasionally prompts me to download something that doesn't exist anymore, or at least at the place it tries to send me. If what you need is actually much older than the following, it may still be findable, but more info would be needed.)
Here's a shot anyway.
Starting here...
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Lead me here...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/javaformacosx104release5.html
...which I gather is the current version, but may or may not require a particular lower version first (do you know what one you have?). Wish these folks would be more clear!
And below is a link that sounds like it would update whatever version was previous to 1.3, as well as 1.3 itself, up to 1.4.1...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120242
After that if you wanted, maybe you could go to the second link above and update all the way to the current version.
FYI, when someone has an existing version, certain ones will get updated or removed automatically, and otherwise the new one just installs separately. (And the the old one can be removed if desired, to save room). But you should probably check into what version you already have, since sometimes that matters.
I found various other links too, but without knowing macs or having one nearby to try looking at... maybe I should just shut up! ;-)
Good luck!
