I'm back from my block!
It just seems somewhat futile to asterisk only vowels in offensive words. It's still pretty obvious what the person is saying.
If it were my forum, I'd asterisk the entire word, so you'd be left with something like ****.

Amen to that!
Now that we have the power to report posts we feel are offensive, you can be very sure that I'll mention the offensive language from Muffled and others to the Deputies.

There are parts that are very dirty indeed. Sometimes they leak. I am sorry.

I did not officially break any rules, so i am not sure if there will be any action, so don't be angry if so. Maybee I will be blocked or something, but I am in the midst of trying to disengage here, so that would be OK.
FWIW, the foul langueage comes from Toughie, and Toughie is OK by me.

there's a huge difference between my very favorite word i use (when i'm having a rough time), and the other curse words slung about for no reason other than the fac thtat ot's in my daily vocab. sure, i'm a parent and that's somethign i've got to change. buttttt!!! putting ****** in for every swear word will only take away from the thoughts comign out of my brain.
no offense to those who are against swearing. but, cussin like i do is the least of my problems. this isn't a company email, so why the need to limit expression?
and if eliminating swear words from my vocab would be the best way to fix my (blanked) up head, trust me, i'd be spewing rainbows and butterflies.
just my 2 cents, giving it before the debt collectors take it,

Good to see.
I too need to be purged of my juvenile and inappropriate tendencies.

Please do not post anything which could lead others to feel accused or put down; and please use the notification system rather than posting that you find a post offensive. Posting on the board that you find a post offensive, or that you plan to use the notification system about it, defeats the purpose of the notification system.
If you have any questions regarding the posting policies on this site, please read the FAQ, located at http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil Follow ups to this action should be directed to the Administration board and should themselves be civil.
Dr Bob has ultimate authority over all administrative issues on this site, and may choose at any time to revise or reverse any action taken by a deputy.

Bob has already addressed this issue hense the *.
It's just a word. How is a word going to hurt you? There are no injuries involved. Who has the right to decide that curse words are wrong, bad, naughty, evil, immoral? Shall we remove books with curses from our libraries too? And let's burn those books just to be sure.
I will curse when the mood suits me. Yes, I know all the grown up words too. And when I'm in the mood I'll use them. And when I'm not, I'll curse.

We need a SWEAR board, where all us truckers/farmers/sailors/or just all round verbally clever people can post!!!
It can be called the CUSSING board!!!!
ROFL!!!!
Now THAT'd feel mighty fine for some, and then the others not need to see it!!!!!
Or....just asterisk.
Would it be better to do &%#*! sort of thing maybe? So we cussers can still get some satifaction, but mebbe not hurtful to others? I am serious with this last thing. Just an idea.....

I haven't posted for a long time and have become an official "lurker" for reasons some know about, some don't. I hope no one takes offense to that...maybe I'll become a regular poster again but then again I'm still struggling with returning. I just needed to add something to this thread.I have a suggestion for newcomers: wander about psychology and read the posts. You will get to "know" these wonderful, strong, brave, fragile, fighters who are trying to overcome terrible things that have happened to them and still have compassion for others to share intimate parts of their lives and experiences. IMO it takes a lot of guts to do that.
So when an occasional swear word gets posted, a newcomer may not find themselves offended, but will understand.
Just my 2 cents worth..

I like the %#@!! idea alot..that way,. no one really knows the word you are thinking about but you do!!! ##%&* won't offend anyone either..with the asterisk it is sooooo easy to tell which word you are using... some people are sensitive to cuss words.. to me, they are just another word.. I have never really beleived in cuss words.. Like who says which words are bad and which aren't?? Like it is okay to say bowel movement but sh**t is a bad word??? how bout caca or doodie??? Why is sh**t just the bad one?? And why is a word about sex or bodily functions bad anyway???? The only reason I watch the cuss words at all is cuz some people are senstive to them.. babblemail me and cuss all you want!!!

Please don't post under more than one name at the same time or change your posting name without following these steps:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#names
I'm going to block this name, please either return to your previous one or switch (following the above steps) to another new one.
But please don't take this personally, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person.
Thanks,
Bob

This is not worth having a fight over. I was merely pointing out that partial asterisking of curse words has little of its intended effect.
And the reality is that there are lots of people who do find cursing offensive.

I find big SUV's offensive and yet a lot of people still drive them.
Get the SUV's off the road, (and the big
never-been-dirty never-hauled-a-thing trucks too) and I'll consider not cursing! :-)Ab

Interesting,
What do you think of the people that drive the SUVs and defend their right to do so?

Cursing with asterisks isn't against the rules here.
I figure that like SUV's, the only real way to change is to lobby the government (Dr. Bob) to change the rules. There's no point in getting angry with SUV drivers.
If it isn't against the rules, it can be done. And it's an issue with Dr. Bob, not with a poster.
I've been to message boards that consider themselves family friendly and don't allow cursing asterisked or not. I've been to message boards where the entire word needs to be asterisked. I've been to message boards where the vowels are *'d out. I've heard of a board where words that would be asterisked here are instead substituted with nonsense words. Which sounds delightfully amusing to me. It's an issue of board administration.
I personally don't mind cursing, and periodically make a large donation to charity because I forget to put a quarter in the curse cup each time. I'm not sure my donation is large enough to make up for the number of quarters...
And I find, as have many before me, that the habit of putting asterisks in place of vowels is a quaint and charming politesse that does nothing to alter the reading or writing of curses.
If it matters to Dr. Bob, I'm happy enough with the autoasterisker. Since I'd never ever be able to guess which words should be asterisked.
The expression of extreme anger bothers me a bit, but that's a personal issue of mine. And the why's and hows of comments to Dr. Bob being acceptable or unacceptable has always escaped me. My personal experience is that he allows quite a bit of it by email, and I try to keep my more colorful comments to him confined to email, since I'm not sure what would be the result on board.
I had to reply to someone in order to post on the thread, seldom. But I intended this as a general comment, not one directed to you or to your post.

Man o Man I missed alot while I was away on vacation!!!!!! I guess I need to @sterisk my post to make sure I am underst**d. Actually I can't read the dang things with these thingys in the post.
Muffled I am sorry some people get upset about certain things. You are ok in my book. Man o man if you don't like certain language you would not have survived growing up in my house. My mother could have made a sailor's ears turned red with her foul language!!! And I heard it all with very tender ears as she did not care how young we were.
Take care all babblers there is a place here for all..rsk
