civility and notification button

Posted by llurpsienoodle on May 8, 2008, at 8:06:36

1) is it civil to write:
"I have notified the administration about your post to me" ?

2) is it civil to write:
"Will someone please notify the administration about this particular post?" ?

3) is it civil to write:
"The administration has deemed this post to not be uncivil" ?

I would not consider this civil -- it seems to circumvent the notification system.

I would find that uncivil, since the person posting would presumably have the same ability to notify as anyone else. Therefore, I would think it circumvents the notification system.

Whether or not I found that uncivil, I would find it ungrammatical, but that's a whole 'nother story... ;-)

Seriously -- that one wouldn't fly for me, although in my deputy persona I might wonder about it more. Again -- it would circumvent the notification system, since it makes plain that someone found the post offensive enough to notify about.

Mind you -- all of that except the grammar note is coming off the top of my head and is only my point of view. Dr Bob may have a different point of view, and this is his site.

I would tend to agree with Racer about the posts circumventing the notification system. But Dr. Bob may have his own ideas.

Here's a scenario for everyone based on llurpsie's #3. Say poster A posts something and poster B posts the single sentence: The administration has deemed this post to not be uncivil.

1. How would you react if you were poster A?
2. How would you react if you were a poster just reading the thread?

Thanks,

Bob

1) I would be aware that something I said triggered someone's civility antennae. I might be satisfied, knowing that I passed the civility test. I might be proud that I toed the line and survived.

I might also be surprised that I triggered someone's civility antennae. I might wonder why I triggered their antennae. If I were feeling particularly ____ I might be very self-critical of my post and wonder what I did to merit this sort of (negative?) attention.

2) I would feel curiosity, and I would be more likely to respond to the thread's content. I would respond with more knowledge about where the boundaries between civility and incivility lay.

sorry to use the metaphorical antennae. I envision them as the elaborate antennae of the gypsy moth.
