Hi, everyone,
The conversation at the birthday dinner a few weeks ago naturally turned to Babble, and a number of suggestions were made:
on the boards:
signatures
profiles
a shorter cap on blocks
more consistencyin chat:
smoother updating
a reminder that everyone is expected to be civil and the administrators can be notified
a notify buttonAnd there was something else, but I can't read it in my notes. What do you all think of the above?

I am requesting that if one is considering to be a discussant in this thread to read a post in this link (citation bhudie) of a previous discussion in relation to posting your response here. If you could, then I could post responses knowing that there was the potential for what I am asking members to read to be included in their reponse here.

We can copy and paste any offending pages of interaction on chat so thats no prob.
My chat sometimes has only mebbe a doz lines of type, so if things going fast, stuff dissapears fast, which is both good and bad.
I like that chat is freer.
I have always found people are good bout toning things down if its getting triggery, or sometimes I just go, cuz I proly just should.
Mebbe on the sign in to chat page yopu could mention the cut and paste aspect.
Maybe a reminder that its supposed to be civil but CAN get lively....Thanks.

Don't go to chat so can't comment. What do you mean about profiles on babble would that mean giving out personal info? I don't think I myself would like that. I like the shorter blocks as seems when someone is blocked they are in need of support the most. Love Phillipa

Profiles, you can put what you want to put out there.
I think they would be useful to remind me of wassup w/others cuz i can't keep everything straight.
It could include country where you from, or dx, age, gender, and stuff like that, pretty safe. There is a profile feature on chat, but I forget its there.
Hope you doing ok Phillipa.

Hi,
Well I think the layout of the pages was designed in the days when most people had a 15" monitor running in 800x600.
These days I don't know anyone with a smaller than 17" monitor running at 1024x768. I know a lot with much larger monitors & I expect so do you.
So I think it would be useful to take advantage of that extra space by:
1. Allowing the subject line of threads to be longer.
2. Increasing the dimensions of the "enter your post" text box to make for easier reading of your own post before hitting the submit button. I know I have to hit submit to see all my typos :)
3. Maybe make the main site features more obvious / larger / colourful. I only realised 5 mins ago that there's a Babble Chat room...! Mind you, I wasn't looking for it & I do miss things sometimes. But if the main site features "Boards", "Babblemail", "Chat", "Search", etc were big & colourful, I might have noticed them earlier.
4. I know some people have Babblemail turned off unintentionally. I've had to post to their thread to get them to turn it on. So maybe a little box in the top RH corner of the screen that ALWAYS APPEARS that said "Babblemail=OFF" & other useful settings choices would be good.
4.1 Add to the above the same "sticky" box in the top RH corner that ALWAYS APPEARS when you're reading inside a thread that says "Email notifications re this post=ON", etc might be useful too :)
Thanks for listening
Mr Be Damned.

ooohh and another thing.
If you could set the main page for each board to automatically refresh every few minutes it would be useful.
Otherwise you never know if someone has just posted something until you manually refresh. There's pros & cons to this. The cons are that you need to decide on an update frequency. The more often, the more "realtime" your experience is. The downside is that if someone leaves their browser open all day it could chew through a lot of their ISP download quota. So you'd have to make sure it was a clever refresh that only updated changed threads. The dumb way would be to refresh the entire page and if there's any graphics involved, the MBs really add up ;)

Damn I'm on a roll this morning..... You better send a thankyou note to Sun Pharma as I'm sure the modafinil is helping ;)
OK, so 1 more suggestion:
A new board re "buying meds" I know this is a minefield for you. And America is the land of suing, but can I ask that you (and your lawyers) please consider it? It's such a big topic for so many Babblers. I'm sure they just end up e-mailing each other which is very inefficient. Like all the advice offered here, learning of good & bad experiences with different online pharmacies would really help others to not get ripped off. Prices vary a great deal and hidden bank fees are a big problem too. It would be so good to be able to discuss these matters here. If you do consider the idea, you could also consider instituting some special posting rules / ban scenarios that apply to this board only, if that makes it any less of a problem. I just know it's such a hot topic and so many people would dearly appreciate it. From my reading here I've never found anyone looking for steroids or human growth hormone, so I don't believe it would attract "body builders" for example. Anyway, just please consider it.
Thanks
Molybdenum.

And I'm still going....!
OK - now the other day I was cruising around Babbleville when I came across "Dr. Bob's Psychopharmacology Tips" at http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/split/Antidepressant-discontinua.html for example.
In particular, I read with great interest the posts from other doctors. Obviously they have a solid medical knowledge + lots of experience with whackos like us. So I think their opinions are "golden". I'm not saying they're better than hearing anecdotals from Babblers, just that their inputs are like a separate reference book.
So.....my suggestion is twofold:
1. Can you clean up the section so that it's easy to read "only the doctor's posts"...and have them nicely linked back to whichever med they were commenting on? That would be great.
2. Add to the above that we could sort the results from a search by say, date or doctor or med, etc would be fantastic.
3. The only problem I saw with the section was that some of the posts are relatively ancient. Some go back to 1995...! It would be absofuckinglutely great if you forwarded each of the old posts back to the particular doctor who wrote them, asking them to write something to be appended to the bottom of their original post that basically tells whether (or not) the experiences they've gained over the many years since, have altered their opinion expressed in the post. Reading what they've learned in the meantime would be GREAT...!
Thanks
Molybdenum.

And the man's still going.....
ok - 2 more suggestions:
1. I know from the disclaimer when I joined that you have the right to use the posts in your research. It would be nice to get some general feedback about what you've discovered. I mean, have you published a paper that states "from my research 80% of Babble posters self-described as depressed, have tried more than 10 different anti-depressants" or whatever. I'm curious to know how we've helped you - I know how your site has helped us :). Do tell ;)
2. Now, just like Pavlov's puppy, we get a little reward after each post. I mean the page that says "Your message has been added (and that's a link to it)." Now, just to please me and in honour of all the bytes I've typed in at your site, would you PLEASE change the text to read instead "We are the Borg. Your message will be assimilated. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile. {...and here's a link to it}" . Go on, PLEASE...?????

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#optionsThere's info bout 'settings' on this page, and link to the settings page.
You CAN increase the size of the box.
Couple other things too.
Also, I am the queen of cuss, so I know, but you could run into trouble mixing a swear into a bigger word. Can't remmeber what you said... like absolutelyf*ckingamazing for eg. you have to remember to manually asterisk the f word cuz the auto asterisk won't catch that.
You got lotsa good thots.
Thanks

Lou, let me guess what you would like from Babble.
My guess is that you would like a reply to all the questions you have asked.
Getting an answer to even one of them might be better than asking a new set.

signatures
profiles
a shorter cap on blocks
more consistentcyi know it remember it, but seems as if we've been asking for shorter blocks, on HERE, for years and you just can't lose with more consistency.
i guess being face to face with Bob means more.

I had no intention of trying to bypass the FCUK detector. I just type what I like & leave it up to the system to sanitise me as required. I do think the filter's a bit of a prude sometimes. I was having a similar conversation with my 10 year old son. He said "Frack" - obviously he's been watching Battlestar Galactica. They say it over & over & over & over & over all episode long. It's their way of saying "f*ck" without breaching the rating requirements. The funny thing was that neither of us could work out if he'd get in trouble in class if he used the word. :) Bloody humans, I don't know.... !

...and here comes another one.
Before I start, I know this probably isn't what you had in mind but I just can't help suggesting it. It'd be soooo nice. Here goes:
How about a sort of "game" that's based on what meds are supposed to do what? You get this graphic of a human (make it look like Dr. Bob?). Then we get to click on meds & drag them onto the body. The days tick by & the "Bob's brain" indicators for dopamine, serotonin, NE, etc go up or down in response to the meds. Plus there's other little indicators for anxiety, depression, psychosis, suicidal ideation, etc. They all go up or down too, sometimes they go haywire for no apparent reason - some based on a bad mix of drugs, some are just random & we have to keep changing "Bob's meds" to continually try to stabilise him.
Fun game or what..? :)
I know what you're thinking Bob..! But you can't let those damn lawyers get in the way of fun.... ;)
The not so stupid aspect is that I think there really exists software that points out contra-indicated drugs, synergistic combos, etc. So some of the rules required to make the game work have already been turned into predicate calculus.
Hmm.....??
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next suggestion:
How about everyone gets to vote on "Craziest Post of the Week". The winner gets little "nut" awards attached to their username for the next week - maybe they're cumulative..? ;)
If you're worried about upsetting the "winner", your system could always e-mail them, alerting them to the fact that they had won. They would then have to "accept the award" ie "click on this link" for it to become public. OK...????
:)
