This always confuses me. Frequently I have no idea what name a poster posted under previously.

Well, yes, that's the idea. In many cases - vast majority I'd say. Thus no requirement in the FAQ to say who you used to be. Sort of a compromise - let the community know you're not a newbie, but to also allow for the anonymity of a new name if the posters wishes....

The challenge is to maintain that anonymity, though. I find peoples' 'voices' here are for the most part, quite unique and unfortunately, when they *want* to sort of - start over - identifiable. Not always, of course, but often it's a really, really hard thing to disguise "yourself" if you've been writing somewhere for a while.

It is disconcerting to me at times, too, to not be quite sure who you are talking to...but OTOH I'm glad it's available, especially to those whose posting names get "outed" by family, friends, etc. (in some cases people will say others then come to Babble and read everything they post once they find out the name....) and they feel the only other option is to completely leave. Or, there have been posters who are very anxious their therapists have discovered/know their posting names and might read, or.....any number of reasons I've heard over the years here.

No perfect solutions/rules...

I am required to notify as per the site's rules, if I didn't I would be blocked. Please just let there be peace on the boards. Leave me be.

If I was somebody who you cared about, then you were notified who I am.

Please don't jump to conclusions about other posters, for example about whether or not they care about you. I realize your feelings may be hurt, but the guidelines still require that you be sensitive to the feelings of others.

1. I don't believe that I did any wrong in saying that sometimes I don't know who changed their name.

2. I indicated that I didn't want to hurt anyone.

3. I am very uncomfortable with someone here indicating that they know how I feel about anything.....much less another poster.

2. My feelings hurt. I don't come to Babble to be hurt.

Hey there all,

I appreciate the explanation given here. ^^^^

Being here only a few months and then also not very active, I'd wondered why people would post their new name but not the old one so some of us that are newer or not so active or struggle to keep up with things(like me) would be better able to keep the previous connection with this member. I now understand how it could be beneficial if someone else has "tracked" a member down-- like a family member or therapist -- and that person doesn't want others in their 3-D life to read things they've posted.....

but.....*sigh*...... it does make it hard for me to attempt to connect with members as I can be unsure if I even know this person or not.... sheesh.... kind of feels like the confusing life(my 3-D life) that I so need a break from. oh well, it's me and my situation.

Mostly wanted to thank you for posting this explanation-- it does make some sense to me... and it's always a good thing --
being a little less in the dark. ;o)
