L-Theanine: Suntheanine® vs. Others

Posted by JonW on September 17, 2003, at 13:25:45

Hi,

I love L-Theanine! I've been taking BioSynergy's, which is Suntheanine®, and unfortunately quite expensive. There are more affordable products out there, but I presume are not Suntheanine®.

Has anyone used any old L-Theanine and gotten good results? I know Beyond-A-Century offers 20 grams of L-Theanine powder for an affordable price, but I doubt it's Suntheanine®. Anyway, you get what I'm saying... Anyone have anythning good to report? Any advice on how to save money?

Thanks,
Jon :)

Suntheanine is definitely the superior form of the product... though I believe what makes it superior is the simple fact that it's 99.9% pure l-theanine. Many products sold as l-theanine are actually green tea extract, which is a source of l-theanine, but how is it that they get away with completely mislabelling it?? I mean, most green tea extracts contain caffeine, and some people may be allergic to green tea itself... so I assume inferior products such as these will continue to be sold until someone becomes violently ill (or worse) from ingestion of a mislabeled product. Ah well...

I've found Suntheanine to be a great relaxant, especially for muscles after a hard workout. It definitely has some powerful... well... I wouldn't really say anti-anxiety so much as "anti-stress" effects.

About saving money, you could just purchase pure l-theanine very inexpensively from online chemical suppliers in bulk (usually lots of 50, 100, 500, or 1,000grams). Then you simply encapsulate that in the large gelcaps (00-size). I'll dig up a good source and then post it.

I find it mood elevating, more so on moclobemide. It clears my head and lifts my spirits. It also relaxes me. It's a very nice combination of effects.

Thanks! I emailed the place I mentioned, Beyond-A-Century, and they told me the product they sell is in fact Suntheanine. So long as that's the case, 20 grams of powder for $18.50 is a good price. Works out to 9 cents per 100mg vs. almost twice that for BioSynergy's product. I always put the capsule in green tea anyway, so it's actually better for me to buy the powder. I can use the scale I have that I used to use for "other things" to measure it out :) It's hard to believe the same stuff is half price, but we'll see...

Jon :)

That definitely is a good price, especially for retail. I have one or two... or five, lol, or those scales that I used to use for, ahem, other stuff as well, lol. I wish I could afford one that could weigh milligrams accurately. I'm going to need one eventually in my upcoming syntheses of and experimentations with various chemicals. I'm hoping to eventually design a drug that takes care of all my symptoms in one dose a day... probably won't happen, but it'll give me something to do. :-)

Hi Jon,

> Has anyone used any old L-Theanine and gotten good results?

I take 200 mg of L-theanine (usually added to a cup of hot tea) to reduce my irritability. I bought the brand Solaray solely because that is what the local nutritional store sells. It works fairly well and the positive effects last about 3-4 hours. Like most supplements, however, I suspect that it might lose its effectiveness if I were to use it too frequently. Therefore, I use it on an "as needed" basis only.

Jon, how were you able to display the trademark symbol in your message? Do you use a Mac or a PC?

That's good to know. I've used BioSynergy L-Theanine for the last 2 months fairly frequently (one to three times a day) without it losing its effect. It could just be placebo, but I like it much better in green tea. In tea, it's effects seem more complete. It's hard to explain exactly what I mean, but it just seems to work better with green tea.

Well, the computer nerd in me is showing... :) I have a PC. If you do as well, I presume you use Windows. If that's the case, click "START -> RUN", and type "charmap" and hit ENTER. It's a pretty straightforward program. At the top of the window there's a box where you can select a font. Choose "Times New Roman". Below, all the characters for the selected font will be displayed in a grid format. The characters are kind of small, and so if you click on a character it will magnify it. Double-click on a character to add it to the text box at the bottom of the window labeled, "Characters to copy". Once you've added the character(s) you wish to copy, click "Copy". Then to paste the characters here, hit "CTRL-V" while inside the box you use to enter your post. Sounds a lot more complicated than it is, but it's really quite easy.

Alternatively, if you are just interested in the trademark symbol... While inside the box you use to enter your post, hold down the ALT key and type "0174" (you must use the numeric keypad for this). Then release the ALT key, and "®" will appear.

I know this is way more than you wanted to know, but I'm off meds in prep for a SPECT scan.... so I'm a little loopy and in my own world right now, lol... Anyway, hope this post made sense!

Jon :)

Maybe you can market it someday, and never have to work again :) Wouldn't that be ironic...

How accurate are the scales you have? If you're willing to put up with a scale that isn't digital and don't mind converting grams to milligrams, you can save a lot of money. Of course, I don't know how accurate the cheaper scales really are... Mine seems pretty good, though. You probably know more about that than me, anyway...

If you are on a Mac, Ron, for ®: hold down the option key and type an r. To find all the rest of the symbols, go to Key Caps in the Favorites folder under the Apple Menu. When you get the keyboard, hold down the option key or option-shift or option-command and you'll see the letters and the numbers on the keyboard change to the symbols they make. Most are under the option key. Different fonts have some additional elements, but much of it is standard to all fonts.
