2nd dose 5HTP - advice pleeeease

Posted by Emme on January 13, 2004, at 15:27:59

Hi. It's me *again*. I took 50 mg 5HTP this afternoon. So this is my second dose - I took some early yesterday evening. I swear the stuff is making me jittery and anxious. Like last evening, it seemed to set in within an hour after - I even took some xanax, so it might have been worse. Is this a sign that I'm getting a bit of an overload at a mere 50 mg? I need a little motivation in general, but this isn't the right kind of energy.

Would tryptophan be a better choice?

Thanks for your patience.

Emme

Hi there,

I don't have any experience on the subject, but I read a TON of stuff from this forum called "chemical anarchy".

link: http://www.animalkits.be/phpBB/search.php

Just type "htp" into the search field and you should get a ton of results. They have some interesting discussions regarding whether products like htp and tryp are bad for some people because the serotonin they produce stay in the blood stream.

Incidentally, I'm trying Theanine, which, like 5-htp, is suppose to increase serotonin in your system. Like you, I'm also having weird reactions even though most literature tauts Theanine as "completely safe" and "calming."

Keep posting and hopefully together we will find something that will work for us. =)

Just wanted to clarify this: I just typed in "theanine and serotonin" in the Yahoo search engine. There were numerous sources that said Theanine REDUCES serotonin levels through degradation, not increases them. Any ideas?

Thanks for pointing that out John. When I did my initial research, I generally read that Theanine "regulated" dopamine and serotonin levels. I just assumed since dopamine and serotonin makes you feel good, that "regulate" means "increase."

So maybe the weird tingling feeling I'm getting is the Theanine shutting down my serotonin levels?

Here's a abstract I found on the web:

"The effect of theanine on serotonin metabolism is more ambiguous, however. One study indicated that theanine had no effect on serotonin levels 25, whereas two other studies showed that theanine decreased brain serotonin 8, 27. A fourth study (by the same author as the previous two) reported that theanine increased serotonin levels in some regions of the brain 10. In view of this uncertainty, anyone being treated with a serotonin reuptake inhibitor for depression should consult with a health care professional before taking theanine. Normal individuals — i.e., people without serotonin deficiency or serotonin-dependent depression — who are concerned that theanine could possibly decrease their brain serotonin levels may want to consider supplementing concurrently with St. John’s wort. Note that taking 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan, a serotonin precursor) along with theanine may not be especially useful; theanine has been reported to inhibit the formation of serotonin from tryptophan 27 and the same could be true for 5-HTP."

Thanks, I'll check it out. (nm) » Beren One Hand
