Fish Oil query

Posted by Maxime on January 9, 2004, at 12:50:25

Hello. I have been taking fish oil for about a year now. Really, I never noticed an improvement in my mood, but I don't think I am taking enough.

Anyhow, I was in a health food store talking to a woman about the different brands she had. I told her it was to treat depression. She showed me some liquid form of fish oil (I forget the name brand) that she said was the best. She told that I would have to take it everyday but then could go down to every second day and then every third day etc. She claimed that once there was enough fat in my brain the results would be permanent.

Has anyone else been told this? I feel like I can never trust a word people say in these health food stores.

Maxime

No she is wrong..There is nothing permanent about fats in our system or whether we take fats, omega- 3s's respectively, through an open oil or soft gel..As long as we replenish through diet and supplements, deficiencies should not occur..While all body cells perform different functions, they still need to maintain structure..Without constant maintenance, this wouldn't happen..Brain cells are no exception.Certain fats are essential and MUST be maintained through diet..As far as dosage of omega 3-s is concerned, you might want to try getting your epa values up to the 5-8g range..High dose fish oils come in 720mg of epa per cap so taking 8 per day, 2-3 every meal, will give you about 5.5g epa..

I've been taken Omega 3 for months, and plenty of it, and it never did a thing for me.

I think maybe we are just wasting our time.

But, Sam's Wholesale Club sells the Member's Mark brand rather cheap, so I figured I'd keep doing it for now. Maybe eventually some of this junk will start to have a noticable effect.

What brand do you take, and what brand do those who claim to have had sucess take?

It never ceases to amaze me when I hear about people here who say they have taken supplements or meds for long periods without knowing if they work or not. I guess its because I never do this. I mean I get craving for things like green Vegetables and Omega 3. I'm highly sensitive but I get a huge profound mental hit from omega 3, stronger and clearer than something like Cocaine, and no come down. Well I just wanted you to know Omega 3 is definetely a big hitter in the mental health picture, but probably only so for those of us needing neural insulation.

We are not all the same. I am anorexic. I starve myself. I know that whatever vitamins or minerals I put into my body will be used and appreciated. I feel sick most of the time because of lack of food. No amount of any vitamin or mineral or fish oil in a pill is going to make me feel "better". I weigh 80 pounds. But I am bipolar and like to try things that would at least help that.

And please don't tell me to just "eat" because it's not that simple. I do know that lack of food causes mood swings. But the bipolar came first.
