I've recently had a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis done, and the results show that I have a significant deficiency in the mineral magnesium. This makes sense to me as I have been suffering from depression and anxiety for 10 years, the one thing that i found which gave me relief was whey protein and other protein concentrates like soy(see my earlier posts from June). I've been taking high dose magnesium citrate since monday(800mg) and yesterday and today I have noticed my muscles in my eye lids are twitching and my thigh musle twitched a bit too. This is confusing to me as I've read in many places that this is a sign of magnesium deficiency, so why would this happen now I am supplementing to correct a deficiency. It doesn't make sense to me. Does anyone on here know anything about this

This is very interesting to me, since I've had an almost identical experience with mg. I haven't had any analysis done, but with all the potential benefits of Mg, why not supplement? Lately, I have been especially interested in magnesium's ability to antagonise the NMDA glutamate receptor and to lower blood lactate levels.So anyway, I can't even take 400 mg per day (the RDA!) without getting twitches. And this is even after a night of alcohol and caffeine in the morning, which would theoretically significantly lower Mg levels, and raise lactate levels, thus increasing need for Mg. I don't get it. If some people NEED 800 mg / day, then why do I get twitches on 400MG? Maybe the real problem has to with some sort of poor ability to regulate blood mineral levels. I get SEVERE mental symptoms from calcium supplement use. In fact, the most depressed I've ever felt has been from calcium use. Calcium is regulated by calcitonin and the PTH I think (might be wrong on the latter one). Don't know if that would come into play. Maybe vitamin D levels are involved as well. But I don't have much of a clue beyond that as to why I seem to get such side effects from calcium and magnesium.

Thanks for your response Mistermindmasta, it's interesting to hear someone else is finding the same thing with magnesium supps.
I've been doing some more reading about minerals and magnesium-other mineral interactions, and I've come across some info that says Boron is involved in the metabolism of magnesium and calcium in some way. Boron is often used to help osteoporosis as it aids the calcium and magnesium getting into the bones. My hair analysis also showed my boron levels to be low, so maybe there is some relationship to my muscle twitches here. I'm gonna try taking 3mg boron with 400mg mag for a week and then slowly build back up to the 800mg I was taking before, I'll let you know how it goes.
Another thing I've noticed with the magnesium supp, is that it is making my bones and teeth ache a little. I am assuming this is a positive thing and means the magnesium is making it's way into my bones and teeth!! It's nice to feel these kinds of effects, as it gives me some faith that it is actually doing something. I did read on a website that when a mag deficiency is quite marked, mag is taken from the bones to maintain blood levels. Then when correcting the deficiency the bones take priority in absorbing the bountiful magnesium, I don't know how much truth there is to this!?

I have a theory which may explain the reason I am getting twitches on magnesium supplements, and this may apply to you to.
I have been on magnesium supplementation for 10 days now, averaging about 500mg a day, and the last few days I have been feeling quite weak. My energy levels feel pretty low and this is making me nervous as I work in a competetive office environment, and signs of weakness usually attract negative attention, which i am attempting to avoid.
However I have also noticed that a previously impossible to remove layer of flab round my abdominals is apparently dissolving, I can feel the flesh in this region becoming more firm. Also I've noticed that my hamstring muscles are beginning to flesh out, and other muscles feel more firm.
I recall reading in the past that low magnesium levels lead to insulin sensitivity and this can lead to abdominal fat and lots of other undesireables, including the dreaded diabetes. So what I am thinking is that my increased intake of magnesium is improving my cells response to insulin and they are sucking more nutrients out of the blood in it's presence than normal. With the now increased responsiveness to insulin, I am temporarily in a low blood sugar state and this is making me feel weak, and vacant. This makes sense to me as my muscles are definately toning up and filling out, and I know the bodies response to insulin is anabolic.
Can anyone corroborate my theory on this, or am I micturating into the wind.
