Glutamine and benzos

Posted by Jakeman on December 20, 2005, at 22:13:42

One of the supplements I take fairly often is glutamine, usually 500 mg in the morning on empty stomach. I also take 1 mg of klonipin at night to help with sleep. Given that both act on GABA, is there a problem with combining glutamine and klonipin? I notice that days that I take glutamine I tend to have a bit more phyiscal/nervous energy, and I'm more likely to work out or run. I'm also wondering if glutamine may help counteract some of the depressive symptoms that sometime arise with the use of benzos.

Any comments or experiences appreciated, Jake

Hi Jake
Do you find you sleep OK the night after you take glutamine? It's supposed to be stimulatory. Any connection with excitotoxicity, is that the NMDA thing? I've assumed that I should avoid it.

Declan,

Perhaps it's has to do with how much you take and and if there is a defincency. I've never had any sleep ploblems with glutamine. I take it in the morning (intermittently) and only 500 mg. I've heard of body builders taking several grams at a time. Another reason I use it is that it seems to decrease my desire for alcohol.

Yes, I think I've heard about the alcohol thing, and it's supposed to build up the gut lining which can be useful if you need to take NSAIDs.

Hi Jake

You wanna tell me about the way (how it feels that) glutamine reduces the desire for alcohol?

Have I heard that kudzu does it too?

Declan,

There's not so much a feeling I can describe other than a lessening of craving. I suspect I've got some kind of blood sugar problem, and that accounts for some of my desires for alcohol. I've read that glutamine plays a part in blood sugar regulation. I've never tried kudzu (it grows like crazy in southern US). I've used Chlorella to help prevent hangovers. It works ok if I drink moderately.
