A quote from Dr. Stoll about Omega-3's

Posted by RedSoxFan79 on January 18, 2006, at 18:43:46

I was reading an interview done by Dr. Stoll and it was pretty interesting, learned a few new things. He states the reason why EPA is more important than DHA. Here is the quote

"Most adults and children seem to have adequate or nearly adequate stores of DHA in their brains. Believe it or not, these DHA stores in the membranes of brain cells date back to a person's fetal life and is provided by their mothers. DHA turns over very slowly, so you don't need much to get by. In contrast, EPA is turned over very rapidly, as it is used for eicosanoid synthesis. For this reason, we think people are also much more depleted in EPA than DHA."

Thanks. A couple of points:

(1) I've read that alcohol consumption depletes DHA.

(2) If mothers in western society themselves don't have enough DHA, they won't have enough to pass on to their babies during gestation and nursing, especially if they have several babies. Maybe it takes several generations for that to happen....

(3) In any event, lots of people in our generation were not breastfed, and formula in the US didn't even contain DHA until > 2000 (formula in Europe a little before that).

So if Dr. Stoll's argument is based on theory, and not on specific evidence of typical brain stores of DHA, it might not be right.

(I am a nursing mom, and after phospholipid testing showed I had plenty of DHA, a good amount of EPA, and too little arachidonic acid, I switched from a 2:1 EPA:DHA formula to a 7:1 (Stoll's). Haven't discerned any difference in mental functioning or mood from either of these formulas.)

This is the end of the thread.
