Inositol and Lithium

Posted by linkadge on February 18, 2006, at 4:44:37

Please don't redirect because more of the focus of this post is about lithium and not inositol.

I know the question has been asked to death, but what is the conscencious on using inositol with lithium. Does it reduce lithium's effects, can it offer any benefit.

Thanks

I'm not sure what kind of effect you are looking for. If it is a basic anti-depressant anti-anxiety effect, it might work out. If you are looking for more of an activating pro-motivational effect, I would be less inclined to think it would help. But anything is possible. You'll never know till you try. It's cheap, natural, safe in super large doses, so why not try?

Some doctors think that inositol stabalized mood by depleating inositol, but others just think the inositol depletion leads to side effects.

Lithium acts as a 5-ht1b autoreceptor antagonist, I don't think that taking inostiol would interfere with that.

(lithium always helps for about 2 weeks and then I slowly start to feel more and more grey)

I think thats a great question link,
I think we are both looking for something to boost our lithuim.... I have no experience with inositol but it seems there is some support in the literature regarding its use for bipolar depression... i'm going to bring it up with my pdoc next time i see him... I wish people on this board had some personal experience with inositol

I've been doing some reading.

Inositol depletion is really only responsable for a portion of lithium's actions.

Like I mentioned above. Lithium is a 5-ht1b autoreceptor antagonist, and this action would not be reversed affected by the administration of inositol.

I think that lithium also has some effects on a growth pathway called ERK, and that the its effects on this singalling system appear early in the administration of lithium, before it reduces brain inositol content.

So overall, I'm not sure. I will try to report on how my own experimentation goes.
