SJW, SAMe, 5HTP, etc, and Type I diabetes?

Posted by Racer on August 9, 2006, at 22:20:46

Tonight our marriage counselor suggested -- strongly -- that my husband try some sort of treatment for his depression/dysthymia and anxiety. After watching what I've been through with drugs, though, he's -- let's just say he lacks enthusiasm for that idea. He did agree, though, that he would consider trying SJW or SAMe if some research says that it's safe with diabetes. I'm overwhelmed right now, so I'm hoping someone either already has done research on this, or can point me towards any easily accessible information about it?

Thanks!

Racer,

I'm using SAMe (400 - 800 mg/day, which is relatively high dosage) and I've been a Type 1 for over 40 years.

I always increase the number of times per day I test when I'm trying new supplements because you never know how ANYTHING might affect insulin dosage requirements. When I first started it I thought it was making my sugars lower than normal for awhile so testing more often was important. It was a short-term issue. Then I stopped taking it for a few years. Now I'm taking much higher SAMe dosages than before, with no impact at all on my blood sugars or insulin dosage requirements.
