Vitex / Questions for TenMan

Posted by H2Obuffalo on October 1, 2007, at 22:01:22

Hi TenMan-

I was interested to read your post on vitex being taken by men. Could you please post what brand you use and what your dosage schedule is? Also, do you find that vitex only works as described if you take it in combination with something else? If so, what else do you need to take for vitex to work for you?

If brand information isn't allowed on this forum, I can give you an e-mail account to send the info to.

Thanks much.

Hi H20buffalo,

I take Vitex once daily in the mornings. The effect seems to carry through for several hours after that so I think Vitex has a relatively long half-life say compared to caffeine.

It's important to take Vitex in the morning so as not to suppress the prolactin surge that normally happens at night. That way you keep your natural circadian rythym intact.

I take 1 tablet daily of the Planetary Herbals formulation.

Vitex works quite nicely on it's own though it does stack well with other herbs notably ashwagandha and eurycoma longifolia.

Thanks much, TenMan. I'm going to give it a try. I've been using ashwagandha (1/2 capsule AOR brand "Gandha" 750mg at bedtime) for years to good effect, so that might add some synergy. (Unfortunately even tiny amounts of Longjack taken in the morning overstimulate me and axe my already challenged sleep quality.) By the way, have you tried the AOR brand of ashwagandha? For ashwagandha, a half capsule of AOR works way better for me personally than NOW, Nature's Way, or Planetary Formulas.

Thanks again.

I take 225mgs. (1 cap) of Jarrow's Sensoril formula. I find it to work the best of all I've tried though I haven't tried the specific brand you mentioned.

Eurycoma is very stimulating. I have managed to cut my caffeine consumption to almost nil since I started it several months ago.

Vitex is great, but my problem with it seems to be incredibly rapid tolerance. It seems to work for about three days consistently, and raising the dose doesn't help. Actually there's definitely a very strong bell curve for desired effects in play, as taking ABOVE 500mg in the beginning does not give me the positive, dopaminergic boost that 500mg seems to.

Would be curious to hear your experience, re: tolerance. Thanks for the postings tenman.
