Does St. John's Wort induce mania??

Posted by qbsbrown on March 5, 2008, at 14:03:23

I'm unable to take antidepressants because of the hypomania they induce in me. Is STW less likey to cause this?

Regards,

Brian

I've had hypomania on sjw before. It was nice though. It was short lived, maybe 2 weeks. I have also had, years later on a different trial, severe agitated irritated crying type mania. Even though it is a natural herb, it has many mechanisms. I do believe sjw has the potential to spark various forms of mania.

The best bet in my opinion is go slow. That is start with 150mg per day and increase by that same amouth every 7 days. No faster than that. I don't think it is sjw itself that does the mania, but rather the sudden jolt it can give circuits all of a sudden. Going slow prevents that and gives everything time to gently adjust.
