SAM-E lingering side effects even after stopping

Posted by Bob12 on July 23, 2008, at 7:53:09

I took 100 mg (half of a 200 mg pill) of SAM-E six days ago, only once, and then discontinued it. Now six days later, I am still having dry mouth, disturbed sleep, and nightmares.

The brand I used was Nature Made.

Does anyone know how long these lingering side effects will last, after taking SAM-E only once?

I would advise anyone to be very careful with SAM-E, and beware of lingering side effects even after stopping it.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks
Bob

No way to know for sure, but I am inclined to say there is something else going on. SAM-e just happened to touch a trigger. Possibly due to its strong sulfur component or methyl component. People with amalgams or that have had them removed are often very sensitive to SAMe because the strong sulfur in it stirs up stored mercury and redeposits it in other places, causing new symptoms that take a while to settle. Or maybe you are of the biology that has high methylation and the last thing you need is more of it. Or maybe the dopamine/serotonin circuits are so sensitive that they just got knocked for a loop. That would be like me. In any case, I don't think it was the SAMe itself, but rather SAMe highlighted that there is something else very out of order.

Bob:

I would tend to agree with bleauberry. I've taken SAM-e at mega-high doses, like 1600mg, at a time. However, I experienced few, if any, effects or side-effects. This is not to deny whatever you are experiencing. However, I also took the Nature Made brand for quite a while (several months) and the only thing I noticed was a very, very, very mild anti-depressant effect. There were no lingering side-effects at all for me. Hope yours goes away ASAP!

Chris

I got pretty bad anxiety attacks from taking Sam-e ( never really had them before) - after I stopped I still would have them in the same situations I originally had them while taking SAM-e . I hate to tell you , it took me a long while to desensitize myself in those situations to where I no longer felt a lot of anxiety. -- I hope whatever you are experiencing doesn't play out like it did for me.

Did the SAM-e side effects eventually go away? I'm curious as am experiencing a similar lingering of side effects after stopping.
