I have compiled a list of possible supplements that help bipolars and/or schizophrenics, and I've listed my current regimen. There may be other supplements out there that you can add to this list, but for now, this is what I've come up with. Also, the supplements may have greater efficacy if you are already stabilized on the right medication. I don't condone mixing medication with supplements that might interact with your medication, so it is always best to check for drug/supplement interactions before you start.
Also, there are other vitamins that might help, such as vitamin B12, folic acid, magnesium, zinc.
Morning:Morning medications
Fish oil
Borage oil
25mg P5P (activated form of B6)
100IU of vitamin E
250mg of vitamin C
150mg Benfotiamine (fat soluble form of B1)
100mg vitamin B1 (B1 hydrochloride)
Afternoon/Evening:Any evening meds like mood stabilizers
100IU vitamin E
Bedtime:300IU vitamin E (100IU gelcap + a 200IU gelcap)
500mg vitamin C
200IU of selenium yeast (excellent antioxidant)
300mg calcium carbonate
50mg P5P
750mg Niacin (sustained release)
1/4 of a 3mg melatonin tablet--about 0.75mg
3 capsules of Country Life's Max Amino ComplexThis is just my regimen that I have been doing for some time now. You may need more or less of these particular supplements. It's a matter of experimentation. And like I said, there may be other supplements out there that you could add to this list. I have been taking a great interest in antioxidants lately. I have tried N-Acetyl-Cysteine with negative results, but that's not saying it won't work for everybody. Some sources say it is a possible treatment for bipolar disorder. Something to consider. Also, R-Lipoic Acid (i.e. alpha lipoic acid) may be worth trying, but I haven't tried it yet. Good luck to you bipolars/schizophrenics out there.

Just a note: Some bipolars/schizophrenics react positively to folic acid supplements, whereas others react negatively with mood swings and worsening of depression, so be cautious when using folic acid supplements. Personally, I'm one of those who reacts negatively to folic acid, but that might not be the case for everybody. Good luck!

All great info as usual. I find your detailed posts very interesting. I used to always take my E, C, selenium, in the morning. Sluggish all day. The way I usually am anyway. But seem a bit less sluggish since I stopped them. Maybe the problem all along was dosing at the wrong time.
Comment on NAC and R-lipoic acid or alpha-lipoic acid. These things are powerful mobilizers of heavy metals, most especially mercury. Alpha lipoic acid is one of only 2 supplements on the planet that can cross the blood brain barrier and chelate mercury from tissues and inner cells.
For anyone with a history of amalgam fillings, heavy fish consumption, hazardous toxic jobs, or any kind of heavy metal exposure, these supplements can be very bad news. Actually this world is so much more toxic than it used to be, I often wonder if the skyrocketing psychiatric diseases and other diseases aren't linked to mercury and lead accumlation.
Anyway, lipoic acid in tiny doses taken every 3 hours (halflife) around the clock is an excellent chelation method to clean out heavy metals. If not done every 3 hours, the loosened metals get redeposited somewhere resulting in repoisoning and worse/new symptoms and worse/new diseases.
These awesome miraculous supplements, but also very risky if done wrong. Whenever someone gets more depressed on NAC, I can't help but wonder if they aren't more toxic than they ever considered. The most common side effect of mercury/lead redistribution is psychiatric (depresesion, schizophrenia, bipolar).

I heard that supplementing with vitamin C and EDTA is one of the better ways to address any toxicity issues. I think it's a must to work with a doctor when detoxifying, not doing it on your own. I agree with you about Lipoic acid. One source says only to use it after you've had your amalgams removed, not to use it if you still have them because of potential mercury toxicity. The public should be made aware of the potential dangers of using certain supplements. At least the manufacturers should warn people on the bottles of their products.
