Fish/Borage oils for Bipolar Depression

Posted by Lao Tzu on December 4, 2008, at 10:49:01

I take a combination of fish oil and borage oil for my bipolar depression. I take them together in the morning with food for better absorption. Some sources say that 9.6 grams of fish oil works best, but I can't tolerate this much fish oil. If you can only tolerate a small dose of fish oil, I suggest trying Eskimo-3 brand by Enzymatic Therapy. The capsules are 500mg each. It is easier to adjust your dosage with smaller capsules, and I find I do best with only 3 capsules in the morning along with one 1,300mg borage oil capsule. I find if I take too much fish oil, it affects my mood negatively, so be aware that your dosage of fish oil will affect how you feel. In my case, small dosages make my mood better, larger doses make my mood worse.

Same for me - small amounts of fish oil are good , higher ones, not so good for me.

Lau, I have also found that taking a dose of Sesamin (250-500mgs)with my Borage Oil increases its effectiveness. Its pretty noticible actually..

This makes sense since sesamin is a pretty strong delta-5-desaturase inhibitor, it makes more of the GLA in Borage Oil convert to Prostaglandin E 1 as opposed to Arachodonic acid.

Thank you. I will try adding Sesamin to my regimen and get back to you.
