Hi, after having a brief respone to N-Acetyl-Cysteine and glutathione injections my next port of call is Alpha Lipoic Acid, does this have any mood enhancing effects though, i can see there hasn't been any major studies done to suggest either way. But was just wondering whether anyone had any anecdotal reports on it improving mood.
thanks

It has been known to improve energy levels which may improve mood. Also, as Blueaberry may point out, it can help to remove mercury from you body, which could improve symptoms of depression that are related to mercury poisoning.

ALA is one of only two substances that can cross the brain barrier to chelate heavy metals out (or into the brain if the body load is higher than the brain). Since heavy metal load in the nervous system has depression as a very common result, ALA can be helpful by removing the cause of the depression.
If any metal accumulation is suspected...amalgam fillings history, ever being around a broken flourescent light bulb, industrial, whatever...care needs to be taken with ALA by starting at extremely small doses (ones that you cannot feel anything from it), and slowly ramp up, the whole while taking it every 3 hours. Its halflife is 3 hours. If it dislodges metals, and you go past 3 to 4 hours without a dose, those metals will be dumped where ever they happen to be in your body or brain at the time.
As with all substances, I have no doubt there are probably a multitude of mechanisms by which ALA could be either helpful or hurtful depending on the person, the situation, and the dosing strategy. A person who does have metals, whether they know it or not, who doses ALA wrongly can get themselves much sicker from all the redepositing of those metals. The ability to chelate metals is probably only one function of many that it does.
The above information is from the book Amalgam Illness by PHD Andrew Cutler.

I've tried it for a pretty long trial with other brain supplements and I'll tell you I wouldn't expect much from it.

If you're looking for a supplement that may have a stimulating antidepressant effect, you may want to combine ALA with Acetyl L Carnitine.

Actually a supplement I took for awhile had ALA and Acetyl L Carnitine and it helped me play guitar better and made things slightly more coloful. Unfortunately I couldn't go to the bathroom on it :(
In a recent retrial all it did was give me headaches. I would try those two together rather than ALA alone for sure. Hopefully you won't have the constipation problem with acety L carnitine.

I think magnesium might help with the constipation. I'm surprised to here of this side effect, I haven't heard of this before.

Magnesium is also good for your brain. I take magnesium glycinate.

It was weird first diarrhea then constipation. The supplement was a mix of different things for the brain called neuro-optimizer by Jarrow Formulas. It could have been the mix didn't agree with me, but I suspect it was from Acetyl L Carnitine, since diarrhea is a listed side effect. I've tried the others seperately and didn't have that problem, but it also didn't work like it did with acetyl L carnitine.
Like I said I tried it again recently and there was no mental boost just a headache. I think my brain has changed since then though.

Alpha Lipoic acid does have an AD effect in my books. It can increase serotonin synthesis, and it works as an insulin sensitizer which may have an AD effect in its own right.
Too much made me a little paranoid however. I think there is some dopaminergic mechanism. It might be particularly useful where a metabolic disorder is comorbid with depression.

Yes, I've noticed that it does have a slight AD effect for me. I seem to have a little more energy and motivation to get out of bed if I take it. However, it is not generally used for depression, but I believe it can help if you're taking all the other supplements generally used for depression. The only thing I noticed was that if I took a very large of dose of alpha lipoic acid, I actually felt worse. So I would suggest trying about 25-50mg per day for awhile, and then after a few weeks, take it every other day or every two days because it is partially fat soluble and after awhile you may not need to take it everyday. That's been my experience with it. Good luck!
This is the end of the thread.
