NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) side effects?

Posted by Lilliable on April 25, 2010, at 0:29:15

My doctor has me taking NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) along with Adderall, Emsam, Depakote, Geodon, and Clonazepam for bi-polar II, anxiety, and OCD. I feel horribly sick after eating. It's as if my body can't digest food anymore. I think it's the NAC. Has anyone else had similar problems? Thanks.

All the meds you are taking makes things confusing enough. NAC makes it even more confusing.

NAC primarily beefs up the body's detox system. If you have some heavy metals, you're stirring them all up. Some are making it to the gut, where candida thrives on metals and sulfur. Not coincidentally, symptoms of candida overgrowth in the gut mimic every psychiatric disease we talk about here.

No one knows the complete extent of NAC's role in the body or what supplementing artificial amounts of it will do. For that matter, no one even knows what the drugs we are taking really do.

Without trying to figure it all out, probably the best thing to do would be reduce the dose to the lowest tolerable dose...whatever it is, no matter how small...and only ramp it up higher once you are accustomed to a certain dose. That means you will have to utilize tricks to make custom size doses. For example, don't laugh, starting with 2mg is not a joke. Some people starting a similar substance, alpha lipoic acid, can only tolerate 2mg at the start. A year later they can take 100's of mg with no problem.

At first it flattened out my anxiety and any obsessions....but then it made me really tired and really flat i.e. depressed (suicidally low for a few hours even, but i could put my finger on the NAC). I took 2,400mg and i react oddly to everything though!

that doesn't sound good; i don't know why it would be occuring. maybe an immune reaction (not an allergy, but somethign else). it is upset stomach nausea specifically?

I'll spare you the details, but entire digestive system seems thrown off. And the nausea is extreme. Based on the fact that I haven't been able to find anything written about this reaction, or find someone with anecdotal experience, I'm starting to wonder if there's just something else wrong with my stomach. Either way, this has been going on for five or six months and I need to figure it out.

Thanks.

I couldn't handle the stuff as I had difficulty breathing on it. I saw one study saying that it can cause asphyxiation in rats. Perhaps I was taking to high of a dose.

I never had any nausea on NAC, but I stopped taking it because I didn't like how it made me feel. Perhaps, a trip to the gastroenterologist might be in order. Maybe they can shed some light on the causes of your nausea. And don't rule out the effect of all that medication on your digestive system. I had unexplained nausea off and on a few years ago, but it was rather mild. Don't know if it was due to my medication or just a symptom of my reflux disease. Do you get heartburn a lot? Do you drink a lot of coffee. Sometimes, too much coffee can cause nausea or if you are producing too much acid in your stomach. There are so many causes of nausea. Bring it up with your doctor is all I can say. If you think it is the NAC, try lowering the dose with your doctor's approval. Ask him if the cocktail of drugs he's giving you is too strong for your digestive system. Or it could be psychosomatic in nature, meaning there's no direct cause for the nausea. It just might be a symptom of your psychological disorder. I've read that many people with mental problems also have digestive problems as well. Whether it's cause and effect I can't say for sure. For myself, some of my digestive problems actually improved on medication, but I still have reflux disease. I hope you get to the root of your problem. Talk with your doctor, and definitely bring it up with your primary care physician. He may be able to rule out a lot of things. Good luck!
